Gánovce combines an exceptional discovery story with a landscape of travertine and springs, as well as architectural evidence spanning several centuries. This gives your trip to Slovakia a clear focus: in the village, traces of the Neanderthal era sit alongside church art and the history of a spa settlement. The story ranges from a discovery dating back around 105,000 years to church buildings from the 19th century, with medieval wall paintings and an altar from around 1500 in between.

Neanderthal Discovery and Travertine

The cranial cast of a Neanderthal woman who lived around 105,000 years ago was found at the Hrádok travertine site. The site is of European and global significance. Nearby in Poprad, the Podtatranské Museum presents the exhibition “Gánovce – Neanderthals and Their Environment”. This allows you to explore the subject beyond the village of Gánovce itself.

Another way to explore the region’s geological history is the open-air miniature museum of Slovak travertines in Gánovce. It was designed to collect and exhibit travertine formations from different parts of Slovakia. Travertine is also a feature of the landscape: the Gánovské travertíny National Natural Monument covers an area of two hectares.

Springs and Protected Landscape

In addition to the healing spring, Gánovce and Filice have a total of two mineral water springs. The healing spring at AquaSpa Gánovce is considered to be rich in gypsum, earthy and carbonated; its water contains mainly bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium and has a temperature of 24.2 °C. Healing springs in Gánovce were already mentioned in 1549. A spa settlement gradually developed around them.

The Dolina Gánovského potoka area of European significance is also part of the surroundings of Gánovce. It comprises Carpathian travertine salt meadows and salt-tolerant vegetation associated with mineral springs. Thus, the history of the springs and distinctive habitats shaped by mineral water are central to the village and its surroundings.

Church Art and Architectural History

The Church of St Michael the Archangel in Gánovce is early Gothic; its construction is dated to the second half of the 13th century, around 1260. The church has Gothic wall paintings from the mid-14th century and an incomplete late Gothic altar dating from around 1500. Several medieval artistic and architectural periods can thus be distinguished in a single building.

The Evangelical church in Filice tells a different architectural story. Construction began in 1873, and it was completed five years later. It was consecrated on 29 September 1878, on Michaelmas, the sixteenth Sunday after Trinity. The Kúria in Gánovce was declared a cultural monument in 1963. ART.4G.PARK is also part of the village’s cultural history: several editions of art symposiums have been held there since 2016.

Hiking Routes and Travel Planning

The green-marked “Zámčisko” hiking route runs from Poprad railway station through Gánovce, the Starý Juh settlement and Kvetnica to Zámčisko. It is 9.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours and 30 minutes. These details will help you estimate how much time the hike will take. Check local trail conditions and markings before setting out.

Another named route is the “Po stopách neandertálcov” circular trail. It passes through the Gánovce Geopark and returns via Poprad. The two routes offer different focuses for planning your trip: the length and approximate duration are given for “Zámčisko”, while “Po stopách neandertálcov” passes through the geopark and returns via Poprad. You can decide how to balance the Neanderthal discovery site, the travertine landscape, church art and a hike according to the topics you want to include in your trip to Slovakia.
