Zlatno in the Tribeč Mountains: Hiking, Cycling and Čierny hrad

Zlatno lies on the southern slope of the Tribeč Mountains and combines a natural setting, a gold-mining history and several clearly distinct routes. The northern part of the village belongs to the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, where protection level 2 applies. In addition, part of Zlatno lies within the Tribeč Special Protection Area for birds, part of the Natura 2000 network. This makes the village particularly interesting for travelers who want to combine their stay with hiking, cycling, exploring the landscape and regional history.

Between Gold-Mining History and Protected Areas

The origins of Zlatno are associated with gold panning in the Stránka stream. A document from 1424 recorded that Mikuláš Forgách was granted the right to wash gold from the sand deposits of this stream. The history is not limited to a date in the village: the local museum presents the development of the municipality through photographs as well as household and agricultural implements. A separate room is dedicated to the geographer Michal Lukniš, who is considered one of the founders of modern Slovak geography.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes from Zlatno

The Tajomný chodník Tribečom offers a particularly concrete choice of routes. The trail begins in Zlatno next to the Môj obchod store. There are six routes to choose from in total, including three cycling and three hiking routes. The audio guide also works offline after downloading. On the yellow route, it takes you from Zlatno to Čierny hrad. A puzzle game is also set up there; the hiking trail is 6.5 kilometers long and takes about 2.5 hours.

For experienced mountain bikers, the 049 – Tribečská hrebeňovka is a considerably more extensive option. The demanding route for experts is 78.5 kilometers long and runs along trails and forest roads in sections. Above Zlatno, it continues toward the Javorový vrch area. Another cycling connection is the green route 5115 – Sľažany–Zlatno–Solčany, which passes through the Tribeč Mountains and by Čierny hrad. Those who want to distinguish between a local selection and a long traverse will find two differently designed route formats here.

Čierny hrad and Paths of Remembrance

The ruins of Čierny hrad lie near Zlatno. Their remains stand on the summit of a 568-meter-high, cone-shaped hill on a side ridge of the Tribeč above the village. The site dates back to the late 12th century and served as a guard castle between Gýmeš and Hrušov castles. The route there therefore combines exploration of the landscape with a specific historical destination.

Another focus is remembrance of the partisan resistance. An educational trail connects Zlatno with the former partisan village of Skýcov. Since 1988, hundreds of people have walked the partisan trail between Zlatno and Skýcov every year to commemorate the heroes of the Slovak National Uprising. In addition, the area around Zlatno, together with Velčice, Ladice, Skýcov, Žikava and Lovce, is among the most frequently visited mushroom-picking areas.

Getting There and Further Orientation

Regular bus services from Nitra and Zlaté Moravce run to the center of Zlatno. The bus stop is located directly next to the Môj obchod store and therefore at the starting point of the Tajomný chodník Tribečom. This provides a documented, specific arrival and route reference point for orientation on site.
