Tesárske Mlyňany – Arboretum, Churches and Cycling Route

Tesárske Mlyňany combines an exceptional arboretum with sacred architecture, pilgrimage traditions and a signposted cycling route. Arborétum Mlyňany as a distinctive natural area

Arborétum Mlyňany extends across the municipal territories of Tesárske Mlyňany and Vieska nad Žitavou and covers 67 hectares. More than 2,300 plant species from different parts of the world grow here, particularly from East Asia, Korea and North America. As a result, the focus is not merely on a single plant species or a regional garden, but on an international collection whose diverse botanical origins shape the visitor experience.

The main walking route through Arborétum Mlyňany is 4.5 kilometres long. This makes the grounds a destination in their own right, where you can discover the plant collections along a designated route. Slepčany and Tesárske Mlyňany are named as the railway stations for reaching Arborétum Mlyňany.

Churches, Chapels and Local History

The Tesárske Mlyňany Municipal Museum provides insights into the local past and the former life and traditions of the municipality through exhibits and photographs. It was ceremonially opened on 8 September 2012. In this way, it complements the town’s architectural and pilgrimage heritage with a perspective explicitly focused on the municipality and its history.

Tesárske Mlyňany is also associated with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and with pilgrimage. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has an open front because it is used for pilgrimages. It was built in 1994 to mark the 85th anniversary of pilgrimages to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Tesáre. The grounds of the parish church also contain a Calvary ensemble.

The parish church itself has Baroque side altars dating from the 18th century. They come from Svätý Beňadik, now Hronský Beňadík. Another important house of worship is the Church of the Annunciation of the Lord: the single-nave Baroque church was built in 1760–1763 in place of an older, presumably Romanesque sacred building and was remodelled in the Classicist style in 1804. Its Late Baroque main altar dates from 1760–1770.

The Mlyňany district also has two chapels of different dates as part of its architectural heritage: a Classicist chapel from 1779 in the cemetery and a Late Classicist cemetery chapel built in 1841.
