Cycling through Obyce

The red Požitavská long-distance cycling route runs through Obyce. In addition, a green cycling route begins at the Obyce–Modoš crossroads. A prominent destination is the Kamenec site. There is a 12-metre-high lookout tower there, offering panoramic views of Obyce and the surrounding area. The site includes a shelter with wooden seating, a fire pit for grilling, an information board and a small chapel that forms part of the lookout tower. The site thus combines scenic views with local amenities, without requiring any additional facilities.

Včelár: Protection Status and Special Vegetation

The Natura 2000 site of European importance SKUEV0868 Včelár lies in the cadastral area of Obyce. The Včelár National Nature Reserve was designated in 1983 and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The protected area is characterised by thermophilous oak forests and xerothermic vegetation on andesite. The term xerothermic refers to vegetation adapted to warm and dry conditions. Parts of the protected area lie in the cadastral areas of Obyce and Jedľové Kostoľany.

History and Culture on Site

The history of the village also reveals several distinct facets. The Michaeli–Viktória lignite mine lies in the cadastral areas of Obyce and Jedľové Kostoľany. After the Handlová lignite mines, the Michaeli–Viktória lignite mine was the second lignite mine in Slovakia. A spring called Žliabok is located in the Žliabok area; the site also has a completed amphitheatre with associated infrastructure. Cultural and social events are held there every year. Religious sites include the Church of Christ the King, built in 1942. At its entrance are elaborately crafted statues of Saint John the Evangelist and Saint John the Apostle from the 18th century. The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary stands in the north-eastern part of Obyce. It was originally a Classicist chapel dating from approximately the 19th century and was rebuilt in 1913. It is associated with a wooden Pietà, which is mentioned in a reference from 1968. Another site with religious and local historical significance is Drieňová studnička. Its discovery and use date back to 1884. The site includes a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes with a grotto, as well as commemorative plaques dedicated to the spring and the statue of the Virgin Mary. Local tradition links the spring to the claim that, during T. G. Masaryk's summer stays in Topoľčianky, water was carried from there to Topoľčianky. The tradition should therefore be understood as such and complements the documented history of the site.

Arriva Nitra provides suburban bus services for Obyce, with regular departures. The bus stops in the built-up area of Obyce are equipped with new shelters and benches.
