Discover Velčice: Culture and Nature in Slovakia

Velčice offers several clearly distinct ways to experience Slovakia: sacred art, archaeological traces, a history of traditional crafts and a protected natural landscape. The village lies in the valley of the Čerešňový potok at the interface between the Tribeč Mountains and the Žitavská pahorkatina.

Church and Chapel as Historical Points of Reference

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Velčice was probably built at the end of the 13th century. Its interior contains frescoes dating from the second half of the 15th century. The Church of the Holy Trinity and numerous monuments located inside it were entered in the state register of immovable cultural monuments in 1965 and 1968. The church therefore reflects a long history of construction and furnishings, with individual periods reaching back to the Middle Ages.

Another sacred site is the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the Seven Sorrows of Mary below Svinec. It was built from 1740 to 1743. Its furnishings include a polychrome statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. The chapel also possesses a reliquary of the Holy Cross, which was brought from Rome in 1748. In terms of Velčice's cultural context, these details complement the older parish church with evidence from the 18th century.

Hillfort and Glassworks: Traces of Pre-Industrial History

On Veľký Tribeč, an archaeological hillfort features monumental defensive ramparts and the remains of entrance gates. Its settlement is dated approximately to the 9th to 8th centuries BC. The hillfort lies in the cadastral territories of Velčice and Kovarce. It thus represents a significantly older period than the sacred buildings in the village and also gives the landscape an archaeological dimension.

Above Velčice, a glassworks was established in Huta in the 1830s. It mainly produced hollow glass, including bottles, glasses and measuring vessels in various colours. This history broadens the perspective beyond churches and fortifications: the documented topics associated with the village also include the production of utility and vessel glass.

Landscape Protection and Nature Observation

A larger part of the cadastral territory of Velčice lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, where the second level of nature protection applies. Velčické cery at the Pod cerami site is registered as a protected natural monument. The site contains a group of old, imposing Turkey oaks. Velčice's natural landscape is also home to eight protected plant species and more than 20 protected animal species.

Above Velčice, there is a reservoir and an enclosure for fallow deer. These two landscape features complement the protected groups of trees and the larger natural areas with additional clearly identified points of reference. Educational Trail, Cycle Route and Climbing Area

The section of the educational trail in Velčice is 1 km long, easy to walk and has parking available. It includes tourist information, a state-protected cultural monument, a church, a monument, a cemetery, a bus stop and an inn. The combination of a short route and several named stops makes this section of the educational trail a compact way to organize the local cultural and landscape themes.

Velčice is also connected to a designated route for cyclists: Cycle Route 5115 leads to Velčice, turns there and continues via Mankovce to Zlatno. Rocks on Veľký Lysec are also registered as a climbing area. The documented recreational opportunities therefore range from a short educational trail and a cycle route to an area with a registered connection to climbing.
