Tlmače

Tlmače connects the river landscape of the Hron with the southwestern foothills of the Štiavnické vrchy. The city lies mostly in the floodplain on the left bank of the Hron. The newer district of Lipník, by contrast, is located on the right bank of the river on elevated terrain that slopes down towards the Hron. Where the river emerges from the mountain arc lies the geomorphological formation Porta Slovenica, also known as Slovenská brána. It was formed by the erosion of the Hron: the river cut through volcanic agglomerates, thereby separating the Kozmálovské vŕšky from the Štiavnické vrchy proper.

Discover the landscape on foot

The Náučný chodník Plešovica is an obvious choice for a walk. The easy, just under 9 km circular trail begins directly in Tlmače’s market square, where the first information board is also located. A total of six boards along the route provide information about the surrounding area. The trail also includes a branch leading to a viewpoint. The educational trail is suitable for walks with children and combines a manageable hike with a designated viewpoint.

When planning an excursion, it is important to distinguish between the circular trail and the viewpoint: the viewpoint can be reached after a steep half-kilometre climb and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Those who choose the trail primarily as an easy loop can therefore also incorporate a marked opportunity to tackle a more demanding section specifically.

Archaeological traces and historic sites

Tlmače has a long settlement history. Archaeological finds attest to settlement as early as the Neolithic period, around 2000 BC. From this period come a settlement with fluted pottery, a Hallstatt-period cemetery of the Podolí culture and a settlement from the La Tène period.

One of the prominent historic sites is Festunok, also known as Hrádze. It is a Slavic hillfort from the 9th century, situated on a steep rock above the bridge in Tlmače. The churches illustrate another chapter in the history of the town. The Roman Catholic Church of P. Márie Sedembolestnej was built and opened for use in 1928 in the municipal cemetery.

The Lipník district is also home to a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was consecrated on Sunday, 11 November 2012. Inside stands a stone altar containing relics of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Alongside its location on the right bank of the Hron, Lipník therefore also offers an independent religious point of reference.

Library and regional culture

The Tlmače Municipal Library is managed and operated by MsKS Tlmače. It is located on the first floor of the community centre in Lipník. Its archive contains more than 15,000 book titles, which are available to members. The Tlmačská grámora is also significant for understanding the city’s cultural context: the 15th edition was a two-day folklore festival of the wider Tekov region featuring singing, dancing, folk music and crafts. The programme included contributions from the Tekov region as well as from other parts of Slovakia.
