Spišské Vlachy: Historic Center, Churches and Galmus
Spišské Vlachy combines a protected historic center with ecclesiastical art, forest landscapes and marked trails. The historic center was declared a heritage zone in 1992. For your trip to Slovakia, this creates a place where cultural and historical discoveries and nature-related themes come together within a compact thematic area: The townscape includes several ecclesiastical buildings. In addition, the Galmuská tisina Nature Reserve and Natura 2000 sites in and around Spišské Vlachy are mentioned, including the Galmus site.
Historic Center and Ecclesiastical Art
One of the most prominent cultural monuments is the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist. After the Basilica of St. James in Levoča, it is the second-largest church in the Spiš region. Inside is a comprehensively restored, richly ornamented ensemble of late Baroque retable altars with Rococo elements from the early second half of the 18th century by Dionýz Riesmayer. The focus is therefore not only on the size of the building, but also on its furnishings and their stylistic and historical details.
The Evangelical church is a typical example of a Tolerance Church in the Baroque Classicist style. Its younger tower dates from the period of Classicism; the Baroque-Classicist furnishings include pews, an altar and an organ. Construction of the church began in 1787. Another historic stop is the former town hall, also known as the Small Church. A late Gothic cupboard altar, a painted wooden ceiling and a choir loft have been preserved there. The designation as a former town hall and the historic furnishings should be considered together: The focus here is not a modern administrative building, but a preserved architectural and artistic monument.
Galmus, Hiking Trail and Cycling Route
The landscape around Spišské Vlachy also offers clearly distinct points of interest. The Galmuská tisina National Nature Reserve has existed since 1982 and covers 55.96 hectares of natural woodland. In addition, Natura 2000 sites are mentioned in and around Spišské Vlachy along the floodplain of the Svätojánsky potok, along the Jánsky potok and in the Galmus area. These designations indicate different protected or designated landscape contexts, without automatically implying a particular form of visit or current access.
For hikers, a local marked trail is documented that connects Spišské Vlachy, Zahura and Biela Skala. Cyclists can use Cycling Route No. 27, the Spišská cyklomagistrála, a longer connection between Kežmarok and Spišské Vlachy; the route is 66 km long. Those choosing between a cultural destination, woodland, hiking and cycling can therefore assign different importance to these clearly defined themes instead of viewing Spišské Vlachy solely through its historic center.
Crafts, Horse Show and Historic Routes
Spišské Vlachy also has a House of Crafts dedicated to promoting traditional folk crafts. The Za huru recreation center is located at the foot of the Galmus highland. The town is also associated with Western riding competitions through the traditional summer horse show “Rodeo na Spiši.” A historic transport connection adds another aspect: The railway line between Spišské Vlachy and Spišské Podhradie was 9.5 km long; the first train arrived in Spišské Podhradie on October 14, 1894. For travel planning, this should be understood as the history of the connection, not as a statement about a current timetable.
