Harichovce Between History and Landscape

Harichovce combines a distinctive landscape setting with an unusually tangible history. The village lies at the transition between the Medvedie chrbty and the Levočská kotlina, as well as in the central part of the Hornádska kotlina. At the same time, its church, parish, medieval privileges, and living folklore point to a long local development. Landscape Between Basins and River

The geographical location shapes the character of Harichovce. The village lies between the Medvedie chrbty and the Levočská kotlina, and at the same time in the central area of the Hornádska kotlina. These names refer to different landscape regions, whose transition is reflected in the village's location. The Levočský potok flows through Harichovce. Its further course continues until it flows into the Hornád River.

History from the 13th Century to the Present

Historical documents cite 1268 as the year Harichovce was founded. Since 1268, the village also had its own parish and priest. Just a few years later, in 1271, King Štefan V. confirmed privileges through which Harichovce was incorporated among the fully privileged towns of Spiš. These two years mark different aspects of the village's history: on the one hand, its ecclesiastical independence, and on the other, its legal status within Spiš. For this reason, the historical classification of the village depends not only on individual buildings but also on its medieval institutions and privileges.

Church and Architectural Traces

A central historical point of reference is the church “Kostol Nepoškvrneného Počatia Panny Márie”. It was originally Gothic and was remodeled in the Baroque style in 1763–1764. The building has a single nave, a semicircular-ended presbytery, and an attached three-story tower. The presbytery refers to the front section of the church. On the right side of the tower's ground floor, there is also a bricked-up early Gothic portal. It is precisely this combination of Gothic origins, Baroque remodeling, and a preserved early Gothic architectural element that makes the church an illustrative example of the village's architectural development.

Folklore and Local Character

The cultural side of Harichovce includes the Harihovčan folklore group. Its repertoire includes folk songs, traditional customs, ceremonies, and dances. The group has performed at festivals in Slovakia and abroad. Folklore therefore appears here not only as a historical subject but also as a way in which traditional music, movement, and ceremonies are passed on publicly. Another local accent is provided by the traditional cooking competition “Súťaž vo varení fazuľovice pri Kadlubku”, to which the municipality of Harichovce invites participants.
