Smizany between Slovak Paradise and Folk Culture

Smižany combines nature experiences in Slovak Paradise with a distinctive cultural history. Part of the cadastral area of Smižany lies within Slovak Paradise National Park. At the same time, a section of the Hornád Gorge begins at the Čingov entrance to Slovak Paradise; it lies in the national park’s third protection zone. Educational Trails and Hiking Destinations around Smižany

One clearly defined option is the Smižianska Maša–Čingov educational trail. It begins and ends in Smižany, Maša, is 5 km long, and takes approximately two hours. Its nine stations focus on local geology, botany, and archaeology, as well as the history of Čingov, changes in the forest, nesting sites, and riverside vegetation. The route thus combines physical activity with an introduction to the landscape.

For a shorter hike in the surrounding area, a 5.9 km out-and-back route leads from Smižianska Maša to the Sovia skala viewpoint and back. The walking time is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Marked trails also lead through the Hornád Gorge to Tomašovský výhľad, Letanovský mlyn, Ihrík, and as far as Hrdlo Hornádu. The recreation areas of Košiarny briežok and Čingov–Hradisko make Smižany the eastern gateway to Slovak Paradise.

A More Challenging Route through Sokolia dolina

Sokolia dolina offers a distinctly different hiking experience. Its crossing is secured with ladders, steps, chains, and bridges, and is possible in only one direction, against the current. The route begins and ends at the SAD bus stop and car park in Čingov. The complete circular route through Sokolia dolina, beginning and ending in Čingov, is specified as taking approximately 7 hours and 15 minutes. This clearly distinguishes it from the shorter educational and viewpoint routes.

Nature between Protected Areas and Biodiversity

Protected species found in the area of Smižany and Slovak Paradise include the Slovak pasqueflower, leafless iris, golden eagle, capercaillie, and otter.

Church, Museum, and Folk Culture

The local history includes the parish Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is a national cultural monument, dates from the mid-13th century, and acquired architectural elements of the Gothic style in the 15th century. The Rodný dom kpt. Jána Nálepku displays the original furnishings, as well as letters and documents from Nálepka’s student, teaching, and military years. It also documents Ján Nálepka’s activities in the anti-fascist resistance during the Second World War.

The permanent ethnographic exhibition in Smižany presents the folk culture of central and lower Spiš from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Textiles, clothing, and their production are the main focus. Please note for your visit: The exhibition at the Rodný dom kpt. Jána Nálepku is accessible on weekdays only by prior arrangement; the visit must be booked at least one day in advance.

Living traditions are also part of the local character. Every year, the Smižančanka folklore group maintains the “fašengari” tradition and walks through the village singing, carrying a roasting spit and a wooden goat. Traditional events in Smižany include the Smižianske folklórne slávnosti. The programme of the 33rd Smižianske folklórne slávnosti included performances by children’s and adult folklore groups, creative workshops, a craft market, and an exhibition.

Cycling Route and Thematic Connection

The easy CY04 Čingov–Košiarny briežok–Spišská Nová Ves–Smižany–Čingov cycling route combines cycling with travel between locations. It is 18 km long and passes through Smižany. The Gotická cesta thematic route also passes through Smižany. Historical sites and a longer cycling loop therefore complement the immediate hiking destinations.
