Rudňany between the Educational Trail and Mining History

Rudňany represents a stop on a journey where the history of ore mining can be seen in various places. The Rudňany mining educational trail is 3 km long and has nine stations. There are also preserved adits, a historic headframe, a mining bell tower, an exhibition and an open-air museum. This allows you to get to know the place from several perspectives without reducing its mining history to a single building.

Adits and Monuments

The Rochus adit is the oldest preserved mining site in Rudňany. It has been a national cultural monument since 1973. Its former importance is reflected in the different functions it served: the Rochus adit was used as a main transport, drainage and ventilation passage. Ventilation here refers to the aeration of a mine. Drainage refers to the removal of water from the mining area. The adit is therefore interesting not only as a historic structure, but also as evidence of the technical organization of mining.

Another striking object is the headframe of the Mier shaft. It is listed as a national cultural monument and is 26 metres high. The Terézia adit was driven in 1835; there is a connection between the Terézia and Krížová adits. In mining, “driven” refers to the construction or extension of an adit.

Church, Bell Tower and Mining Exhibition

The Church of Saint Clement is also one of the notable architectural landmarks of the place. It was originally built from fir wood, later plastered and expanded with a masonry extension. The mining bell tower next to the church was built in 1946. Thus, the history of religious architecture and the memory of mining meet directly at this site.

The ROCHUS open-air mining museum displays mining technology, mining locomotives, mine carts and other artefacts from ore mining.
