Betlanovce – Renaissance, Gorges and the Hornád Gorge

Betlanovce between Renaissance and Gorges

Betlanovce combines remarkable architectural history with the landscape of the Slovak Paradise. The village lies on the northern border in the buffer zone of Slovak Paradise National Park and is also a starting point for several well-known gorges. This creates a clear contrast for your travel decision: Renaissance and church buildings are the focus in the village, while educational trails, waterscapes and gorges await in the surrounding area.

Renaissance Manor House and Historic Churches

The Renaissance manor house in Betlanovce is the oldest Renaissance manor house in the Spiš region. It was built between 1564 and 1568. Because of its Renaissance gable attic, local residents call the manor house “Korunky”. This name refers directly to the building’s distinctive architectural feature.

The Church of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian also has a long history. It already stood in Betlanovce in the second half of the 13th century. In 1309, the Church of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian received a plenary indulgence from Pope Boniface IX; it was dedicated to Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian. It was extensively rebuilt between 1731 and 1781. The historic appearance of the village is complemented by a late Baroque curia dating from the second half of the 18th century.

An important restriction should be noted when sightseeing: the manor houses in Betlanovce are currently privately owned. The county house is currently a fenced-off ruin. The buildings are therefore part of the village’s history, but should not generally be understood as freely accessible interiors.

Educational Trail, Gorges and Water Activities

Tourists use Betlanovce as a starting point for the Suchá Belá, Piecky, Veľký Sokol and Kláštorná roklina gorges. The Hornád Gorge educational trail is also located in the surrounding area. It is open year-round, is 22 km long and includes 16 stations with 20 information boards. This makes it possible to explore the area not only as a hiking landscape, but also through designated information about nature and terrain.

During the summer hiking season, the Hornád Gorge can be navigated under favourable conditions and with sufficient water in a one- or two-person kayak, canoe, inflatable boat or paddleboard. The launch site for navigating the Hornád is located directly after the turn-off to Betlanovce, immediately before a bridge. Short-term parking is available there. Navigation is therefore subject to the season, conditions and water level, and differs significantly from the educational trail, which is open year-round.

Betlanovce is also located in the Slovenský raj Special Protection Area for birds, designated by Decree No. 3/2011 Coll. of the Slovak Ministry of the Environment. The designation of the protected area is a separate spatial status and should not be equated with a statement about specific animal sightings or a guaranteed nature experience.

Accommodation and Local Life

For visitors, Betlanovce has a car camping site, private accommodation and a restaurant. This documents different types of accommodation and a dining option in the village, without allowing any specific facilities, prices or availability of individual businesses to be inferred.

The local events calendar includes the “Juniálesy pod holým nebom”, which developed into a tradition in Betlanovce and is usually associated with a varied programme for children and adults. The “Katarínska zábava” was held annually in Betlanovce at the Slovenský raj Hotel. For travel planning, these details should be understood as cultural local history, not as an announcement of current dates.

If you would like to consider other places as alternatives for your trip to Slovakia, you can find Hnilcik, Arnutovce, Harichovce, Matejovce Nad Hornádom, Letanovce, Spisske Tomasovce, Markušovce and Teplička here.
