Letanovce – Prielom Hornádu, Via Ferrata and Medieval Traces

Letanovce offers a combination of impressive landscapes, special hiking experiences and a cultural history dating back to the Middle Ages. The Prielom Hornádu is particularly significant when making your selection: the Prielom Hornádu National Nature Reserve also extends across the cadastral territory of Letanovce. Prielom Hornádu itself is an almost 12 km long, canyon-like gorge along the upper course of the Hornád River.

Landscape along the Hornád

The gorge is a distinct focus of the nature experience. In summer, Prielom Hornádu can be traversed by kayak, canoe, inflatable boat or paddleboard under favourable conditions and with sufficient water levels. This option is expressly subject to the season, suitable conditions and sufficient water levels. You should therefore regard the water activity as an option dependent on the weather and water level, not as a form of sightseeing available at any time. Another specific option is the Ferrata HZS Kyseľ circular hike from Letanovce. It is 14 km long and has a walking time of 6 hours and 5 minutes. A special via ferrata set is mandatory for entering the Ferrata HZS Kyseľ; it can be rented from several rental points. In addition, the Ferrata HZS Kyseľ is accessible from 15 June to 31 October and can only be traversed in one direction, from bottom to top. The prescribed direction and required equipment distinguish this tour from an ordinary hike and are essential for your planning.

History in Letanovce and Kláštorisko

The cultural and historical sites also offer distinct highlights. The oldest parts of the Roman Catholic Church of All Saints in Letanovce date from the second half of the 13th century. Inside the church, there is an original Romanesque portal above the Holy Sepulchre. At the same time, the church is generally open only during services. It is therefore one of the attractions whose historical significance cannot be equated with the possibility of visiting the interior at any time. A Carthusian monastery was founded in Kláštorisko in 1299. Archaeological investigations in Kláštorisko have also revealed traces of fortified settlements from the Late Bronze Age. Together, these two references broaden the historical perspective beyond medieval ecclesiastical history: monastic history and archaeologically documented settlement traces from a much earlier period stand side by side here. The Symbolic Cemetery is also located in the vicinity of Letanovce, an open-air gallery featuring wooden artworks by young artists from the Spiš region. The site thus combines a landscape-oriented setting with contemporary regional art, without this implying any specific opening or event schedule.

Practical guidance for your selection

The nearest access from Letanovce to Letanovský mlyn leads along an asphalt road through fields. This specific access route is a separate point of orientation among the documented destinations and should not be equated with the route of the via ferrata or the canyon-like gorge. When making your travel decision, you can therefore distinguish between historical sightseeing destinations, a designated via ferrata route, a water-level-dependent passage and an access road to Letanovský mlyn.
