Hrabusice – Gorges, Church Art and Cycling Route

Hrabušice combines impressive gorge landscapes with tangible history. The village is particularly interesting if you want to combine nature experiences in Slovenský raj, a short marked cycling loop and significant religious art in the same travel itinerary. It is worth distinguishing carefully between Hrabušice itself and Podlesok, a district of Hrabušice: Podlesok is a suitable starting point for hikes into the gorges of Slovenský raj and lies at the mouth of the Suchá Belá Gorge.

Gorges around Podlesok

The Suchá Belá Gorge is characterized by a striking sequence of waterfalls. In the specified order, these are Misové vodopády, Okienkový vodopád, Korytový vodopád, Bočný vodopád and Kaskáda. Those who choose the Prielom Hornádu gorge encounter a hiking trail with seven metal bridges and walkways, around 320 m of chains along exposed rock walls, 140 climbing aids and approximately 70 m of wooden walkways. It is precisely these specific trail features that distinguish a clearly recognizable gorge experience from a general description of the landscape.

The SR10 Prielomom Hornádu – west circular trail is also clearly connected with Podlesok: it starts and ends there at the SAD bus stop and the car park. Podlesok is also home to a field station and an information center operated by the administration of Slovenský raj National Park. The place is therefore relevant not only as a landscape designation, but also as a point of orientation for visitors who want to focus their stay on the gorges.

Cycling and a manageable alternative

In addition to the hiking trails, the marked “Hrabušice, Majer – okruh” cycling route offers a separate way to explore the surroundings by bicycle. The route is 4.0 km long. Its clearly stated length distinguishes it from the more extensively equipped gorge trails and provides another independent way to discover the area. Nothing beyond the marking and the route length should be assumed for this cycling route.

Church Art and History

Hrabušice is home to the St Lawrence Church, which was originally a Romanesque church from the mid-13th century. Its Late Gothic winged altarpiece dates from 1516 to 1520 and contains sculptures from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. The church thus brings together two historical layers: the Romanesque origins of the building and its Late Gothic furnishings from the early 16th century. The St Lawrence Church was open to the public daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Another historical trace lies on the summit of Zelená hora in the Slovenský raj area, near Hrabušice. A castle ruin is located there. To this day, only heavily destroyed foundations and remnants of walls remain. The site therefore represents less a fully preserved building than the visible remains of a former fortification.

Getting There and Choosing Your Location

Hrabušice can be reached by train from Žilina and Košice via the Vydrník stop. The stop is 3 km away. The landscape, cycling route, church art and castle ruin each offer their own distinct emphasis rather than forming a single uniform excursion destination.
