In Odorín, church architecture, art and local traditions reveal different sides of the village. The Kostol sv. Mikuláša (Church of St. Nicholas) dates back to the 13th century, around 1270, when it was built as a late Romanesque to early Gothic church. Its architectural history also tells a story of changing interior spaces: originally a single-nave church, it took on its two-nave form in the 1380s when the nave was vaulted over a central pillar.

Culture, Architecture and Art

The change from a single-nave to a two-nave church makes an important stage in its architectural history tangible. Another period is represented by the late Gothic statue of the Madonna, dating from 1460 to 1480. It stands at the Marian altar in the side chapel of Panny Márie Snežnej (Our Lady of the Snows), which was built in 1807. Its rib vault and the arcades opening onto the nave add to the variety of architectural forms within the church. For culturally minded travellers, the church offers more than a single date: its design, chapel and artwork can be appreciated as distinct, clearly identifiable features.

Opposite the church stands the Roman Catholic parish building. It was built on older Baroque foundations and redesigned in the neoclassical style in 1826. Together, the church and parish building show how different architectural periods stand side by side in Odorín: here, an older history of sacred architecture and late Gothic art; there, the neoclassical redesign of a building on a Baroque base.

The Zemianska kúria so sýpkou (noble manor house with granary) offers another glimpse into the village’s architectural history. The building was constructed in the 18th century on older foundations. It originally served as a manor house, with a grain store on the upper floor. It has been fully reconstructed. These former functions make the building’s name easy to understand: the manor house and granary were both part of its original use. The building thus complements the sacred architecture with another part of local architectural and social history.

Local History and Nature

Odorín’s history also includes a pivotal event of the 19th century: the village was one of the centres of the 1831 cholera uprising. This historical reference offers a different perspective from the architectural history of the church and manor house. Those interested in cultural history will find both long-term changes to buildings and a specific connection to the events of 1831.

A distinctive natural feature is Markušovský Hríb, a protected sandstone formation located within Odorín’s cadastral area. As a sandstone formation, it offers a different subject from the churches and historic buildings; its protected status is an important part of what makes it noteworthy. Cultural history and nature are therefore two distinct themes, each of which may play its own part in deciding what interests you about Odorín.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Recurring customs also shape the character of the village. Odorín holds an annual children’s carnival with costumes and masks. Turíce, the Pentecost festival, is also celebrated each year by raising a maypole. The two traditions bring different cultural highlights to the calendar: one is a masked carnival for children, while the other is a festival with a maypole ceremony.

Beľušar is a recurring cultural and social event in Odorín. At the event held on 28 June 2025, visitors could enjoy various specialities and goulash prepared especially for the occasion. This information refers to that particular edition; if you want to plan your trip around a specific festival, check the date of the event in advance.

Considering Odorín as a Destination

To decide whether Odorín is a good fit for your trip to Slovakia, consider several specific points of interest: the architectural history and Madonna statue at the Kostol sv. Mikuláša, the reconstructed historic building, the protected sandstone formation or the recurring local festivals. Depending on whether you are more interested in architecture, history, nature or traditions, a different aspect may take centre stage. If Odorín appeals to you, you can also use these interests as a starting point when looking for a hotel.
