Spisske Tomasovce: Nature, Rocks and Local History

Spisske Tomasovce combines nature experiences in the northern Slovenský raj with a multifaceted local history. For your travel decision, two different focal points stand side by side: around Čingov, trails lead to distinctive rock formations and through the Prielom Hornádu area, while churches, archaeological sites and historic buildings bring the history of Spišské Tomášovce to life.

Natural area between Čingov and the Hornád

Čingov is located in the cadastral area of Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce, in the northern part of Slovenský raj National Park and in the third level of protection. The centre offers extensive accommodation and catering facilities, enabling year-round activities in nature. For travelling there, it is also relevant that Čingov can be reached from the Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce railway stops.

One of the most distinctive landscape features is Tomášovský výhľad. The terraced rock formation lies on the southern slope of Ludmanka at an altitude of 680 metres above sea level and rises in some places approximately 145 metres above the Hornád River. The rock is used as a climbing practice area. The shortest walking route leads from Spišské Tomášovce along a green-marked hiking trail, initially through a meadow and then through a forest with a moderate incline. Tomášovský výhľad can also be reached from Spišské Tomášovce via a cycle route. The route K Tomášovskému výhľadu runs via Pri Tomášovskom výhľade to Ďurkovec, through an open rural landscape in the northern Slovenský raj, with views of the Hornád Basin and the High Tatras.

The Prielom Hornádu National Nature Reserve has covered 290 hectares since 1964 and also includes the cadastral area of Spišské Tomášovce. The educational trail in Prielom Hornádu is open year-round, has 16 stations with 20 information panels and is accessible from Čingov. Another described hiking option is the route to Sovia skala: it leads along good roads and paths and is considered easy and comfortable, although the steeper section on the ascent to Sovia skala must be tackled.

Church, hillfort and rural heritage

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel stands in the village. It is listed in the Slovak register of immovable national cultural monuments under the number UZPF 799. The present church was built in the first half of the 14th century in the Gothic style and extensively remodelled in the Classical style in 1827. Next to it stands a brick Chapel of the Holy Trinity, built in 1766.

The older settlement history is also present in the local area. A significant Slavic hillfort was located on the boundary of the present-day cadastral areas of Spišské Tomášovce and Smižany in Čingov. Archaeological excavations uncovered several dozen residential and farm buildings there. The western area of Hradisko I, also called “Pod hradiskom” or “poloha 3”, lies in the cadastral area of Spišské Tomášovce.

The historic features also include the Kováčska vyhňa forge and the sýpka granary. The remains of a brick kiln or forge are preserved in the smithy; both objects were declared monuments by Resolution No. 52 of the Council of the ONV of Spišská Nová Ves dated 22 March 1985. Spišské Tomášovce is also home to a remnant of Kúria Tyba, which was the seat of the Counts Andrássy and the Bartsch family. Only ruins remain today of the former Renaissance manor house in Hadušovce.

The local history extends into the present day of 2026: on 31 May 2026, the statue of the Hadušovský Spišský Kopijník was unveiled in Spišské Tomášovce. It commemorates the tradition of the Spiš lancer communities and their knights. During Fašiangy, a procession with spit-roasted meat and music is organised, and the Christmas visit of the Betlehemci has been preserved as a traditional custom.

Other places in the surrounding area: Slovinky, Rudnany, Hrabusice, Arnutovce, Krompachy, Poráč, Betlanovce, Spišské Vlachy.
