Vitanova between Oravica, Cultural Heritage and Natural Landscapes

Vitanová combines a documented settlement history with a river landscape, cultural monuments and natural areas in the surroundings of Tatranský národný park. This provides different focal points for planning your trip: historical evidence in the village, hiking and landscape experiences along the Oravica, as well as thermal baths and trails in the direction of Oravice.

Historical Evidence in Vitanová

The documented founding of the settlement of Vitanová dates back to 1552. At that time, a new settlement and a Šoltýstvo were established on a cleared area called “paszeky Vitanova”. Among the defining cultural monuments is the column of Saint Roch, created in 1770. This folk stonework in the rustic Baroque style is designated as a national cultural monument.

Another historical testimony is the grave cross at the grave of the former village judge Vojtašák in the lower cemetery. It dates from 1851 and bears reliefs of Saint Martin, Saint Andrew and an unknown saint. The Roman Catholic parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was ceremonially opened in 1932; its altars were made by Master Dlugopolský from Trenčín. A preserved log house also forms part of the villagescape. It consists of massive beams and retains its original openings as well as a wooden portal with a round-arched entrance.

Oravica and Protected Landscapes

The Oravica, a tributary of the Orava, flows through Vitanová. The river is part of the Ramsar site “Rieka Orava a jej prítoky”. Dippers, kingfishers and otters are associated with the watercourse. This natural aspect complements the village’s historical evidence with a natural area whose significance extends beyond the built-up zone.

In the southern part of Vitanová’s cadastral area, in Tichá dolina, lies the area of Tatranský národný park, with the third level of area protection. This area belonging to the national park also contains the national nature reserve NPR Osobitá, with the fifth level of area protection. When planning a hike, it is important to note that these are differently protected landscape areas, not a uniformly described excursion area.

Hiking, Cycling and Thermal Baths

If you would like to combine nature experiences with another destination, the route leads to Oravice. The town is 8 kilometres from Vitanová and has thermal baths that are open year-round. Vitanová and its surroundings also offer opportunities for hiking in nature, including hiking trails near Oravice.

South of Vitanová lies Juráňova dolina, at the confluence of Bobrovecký potok and the Oravica. It is considered an easy walk through a gorge with beautiful views. For cyclists, cycle paths are planned in the built-up area of Vitanová along existing local roads towards the neighbouring municipalities and the Oravice recreational area. Outside the built-up area, they are intended to continue along existing field roads as two-way routes. The planning status of these cycle paths remains part of the description.

Further Cultural and Winter Highlights

Vitanovská heligónka is described as a significant cultural and sporting event. For the winter area, the Vitanová–Vrchdolinka chairlift is stated to have a length of 965 metres, a vertical difference of 243 metres and a capacity of 2,400 people per hour. Ski Vitanová is reported to have 4.25 kilometres of ski slopes.
