Tvrdosin: Culture, Gorges and Cycle Paths

Tvrdošín lies in northern Slovakia at the southeastern tip of the Orava Basin, between the Skorušinské Mountains and the Orava Hills. The town combines a rich cultural history with landscape experiences in the Juráňova Valley, Oravice and along regional cycle paths. When planning your trip, the main question is therefore whether you would prefer to focus your stay more on art and historic sites or on gorges, trails and sporting activities.

Art and History in Tvrdošín

A permanent cultural attraction is the Márie Medvecká Gallery. It presents a permanent exhibition featuring a selection from the life’s work of the painter and national artist Márie Medvecká. The exhibition has been housed since 1979 in a Neoclassical manor house from the 19th century in Tvrdošín and comprises 180 paintings and 88 drawings. The attic contains the “Ateliér” rooms, which have been used for temporary presentations of visual art since 2000. The town’s historic heritage also includes the oldest historic church monument complex in Tvrdošín. Its history dates back to the first half of the 15th century; between 1650 and 1654, it was remodelled in the Renaissance style. The pilgrimage site of Skalka provides a different religious focus. It originated from a chapel carved into the rock around 1870. Prayers, litanies, Stations of the Cross devotions and a Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows take place in Skalka. The complex also includes a shelter and an access road.

Gorges, Educational Trails and Cycle Routes

The Juráňova Valley lies within the protected area of TANAP. The trail there leads through a one-kilometre-long limestone gorge equipped with paths and benches. Its characteristic features include a striking canyon, water-shaped depressions and small waterfalls. Anyone who, on a nature excursion, wants not only to admire a landscape but also to follow a clearly defined route will find Route A of the educational trail in Oravice, with 22 stations and a length of 14.6 kilometres. A trail described in Oravice also includes three wooden shelters for resting. Tvrdošín also offers different options for cyclists. The Tvrdošín section of the Kościelisko–Witów–Oravice–Tvrdošín cycling and tourist trail is 14.7 kilometres long. On the 52.5-kilometre “Under the Roháče Mountains” cycle route through the Skorušinské vrchy, Tvrdošín is the last place listed. The Oravice recreational centre is located in a mountain landscape and offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and winter sports. It thus complements the gorge and educational-trail experiences with additional active seasons, without requiring the various activities to be combined into a single route.

Activities, Festivals and Local Character

For shorter activity breaks, there is K-PARK in the Medvedzie residential area, between residential buildings 50, 48 and 13. Its facilities include an outdoor table-tennis table, a bouldering wall, skateboard elements, bicycle stands and a basketball hoop. The modular Adelaie pump track in Tvrdošín is 159 metres long and is located next to the entrance to the grounds of the municipal technical services. The events calendar adds further highlights. The Folklore Festival beneath Osobitá is a traditional annual event organised by the town of Tvrdošín in Oravice. Its programme includes traditional children’s games, songs and dances and supports the preservation of folk traditions. The traditional Michalský jarmok fair also takes place every year in Tvrdošín at the end of September. Handicrafts, traditional specialities, handmade products and various refreshments are offered there. Further linked destinations are Trstená, Liesek, Zuberec, Nižná, Oravsky Biely Potok, Podbiel, Vitanova and Suchá Hora.
