Zuberec combines the distinctive culture of Orava with mountain views and clearly described excursion destinations. Anyone looking for accommodation here can plan their stay according to different interests: The Múzeum oravskej dediny presents traditional ways of life, the Rozhľadňa Machy offers views of the Western Tatras, and the Brestovská jaskyňa adds a natural landmark to the attractions. A ride on the Roháčsky turistický vláčik also passes through several of these well-known places.

Traditional Orava at the Múzeum oravskej dediny

The Múzeum oravskej dediny presents more than 50 buildings of folk architecture. They are arranged in ensembles representing different parts of the Orava region. As a result, you encounter not only individual historic buildings but also different forms of village architecture within a single museum site. Furnished houses, traditional crops and kept domestic animals provide an impression of the former lives and work of the people of Orava.

The museum includes, among other things, a water-powered mill, a Mangeľ for smoothing blue-dyed fabric, an oil mill and a pottery kiln. These facilities make craft and agricultural activities understandable through concrete objects. During the summer holidays, Remeslá na dedine offers demonstrations every Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00 in pottery, wood carving, wire art, woodturning and the production of beeswax candles. If you plan your visit for the first weekend in August, the Podroháčske folklórne slávnosti also take place in Brestová near Zuberec. The festival is designed as a three-day international folklore event and takes place every year on this weekend.

Machy: Views and a Hike You Can Plan

The Rozhľadňa Machy stands on the 1,202-metre-high Mount Machy above Zuberec. From there, views extend across the Western Tatras, the Skorušinské vrchy and the municipality of Zuberec. An official Machy hiking route is also described for your day planning. It starts and ends in Zuberec, is classified as an easy tour, is expected to take three hours and has an elevation gain of 440 metres.

Cave, Ski Area and Tourist Train

The Brestovská jaskyňa is located in the cadastral area of Zuberec and is designated a national natural monument. It is also considered the first cave in Orava and the Western Tatras to be opened to visitors. Another destination to include in your travel plans is the Roháče – Spálená ski area. It lies in a mountain valley below Salatímni in Tatra National Park and is about 10 km from Zuberec.

The Roháčsky turistický vláčik offers a special way to get your bearings. Its route runs from Habovka through Zuberec, passing the Brestovská jaskyňa and the Múzeum oravskej dediny, and continues to Zverovka. This makes several destinations mentioned in connection with Zuberec visible along a described route.
