Nižná: Ostražica, Františkova Huta and Orava experiences

Nižná combines the landscape of the Orava Valley with exceptionally tangible traces of its history. The town lies on an alluvial terrace of the Orava River and has hilly to mountainous terrain. The municipality includes the eastern slopes of Oravská Magura and the Skorušinské vrchy. Here, a river terrace, limestone rock formations and mountain landscapes meet.

Ostražica and the history of Františkova Huta

The limestone rock formations near Nižná are dominated by Ostražica, which rises to 767.7 metres. The mountain is home to a fortified Hallstatt-period hilltop settlement that was an important centre from the end of the Late Bronze Age. Archaeological finds also document approximately 500 to 600 years of apparently continuous prehistoric and early historic settlement on the hill. This makes Ostražica understandable not only as a landscape feature, but also as a place with an unusually long settlement history.

A second distinctive cultural site lies in the cadastral area of Nižná: Františkova Huta. Visitors can see preserved perimeter walls, the remains of the building with the bellows, and a pile of iron ore. The technical monument complex was built in 1836. The preserved complex includes the remains of the hammer mill, water intake and outflow channels, a bellows chamber, a factory hall and a blast furnace. There is also a car park on a meadow beside the main road at Františkova Huta. At the end of August, demonstrations of smelting iron ore using an ancient technique take place there as part of Dní železiarstva.

There is also a cultural offering in the town itself: Ostražica Cinema has a cinema hall with 308 seats. Folklore enthusiasts can attend the Nižnianske krpčeky competition. The Pltnícke dni are an attraction for tourists in Nižná; the recurring Pltnícky deň includes the traditional striking of the raft and has reached its 30th edition.

Cycling, hiking and winter sports

Nižná is also connected with regional activities organised by Cykloklub Nižná. Together with the municipality of Nižná and the Žilina self-governing region, the club organises the Okolo Tatier cycling race. Every year, Cykloklub organises approximately 30 cycling activities in the Orava region. It also organises hikes in the Western Tatras with the Roháče, the High Tatras, and the Lesser and Greater Fatra.

During Okolo Tatier, the peloton set off at 8 a.m. through the streets of Nižná and travelled through the surrounding villages towards the Suchá Hora border crossing. The Okolo Tatier route ended in Nižná.

For the cold season, Ski Centrum Uhliská is located near Nižná nad Oravou in the Skorušinské vrchy mountains. It has four ski lifts and slopes for beginners to intermediate skiers. Facilities include ski and snowboard rental, a ski school and a snowboard school, as well as a restaurant.

If you would like to add more places to your selection, you can also view Liesek, Vitanova, Trstená, Suchá Hora, Tvrdosin, Podbiel, Oravsky Biely Potok and Zuberec.
