Tomášov: Sacred Architecture and Park
Accommodation in Tomášov
Tomášov lies in the Podunajská nížina, in the western part of Žitný ostrov and on the alluvial ridge of the Malý Dunaj. Its location is therefore described both in terms of the lowland region and the river ridge. For planning your trip, the specific themes include sacred architecture, a historic manor house, a large park and a weather-dependent leisure activity.
Sacred Architecture and Furnishings
The parish church “Kostol svätého Mikuláša” is single-naved and has a semicircular sanctuary and a rectangular bell tower. A single-nave church is defined by one main nave; the term therefore describes the building’s basic structure. The combination of a rounded sanctuary and a rectangular tower reveals two distinct geometric forms within the church’s architecture.
The parish church has an organ dating from 1864, with eight stops, one manual and pedals. Stops are individually selectable tone colours; the manual is the keyboard, while the pedals are played with the feet. Two Romanesque baptismal fonts are located next to the present-day church. Together, the instrument and fonts complement the architectural focus with music and liturgical furnishings.
Manor House, Chapel and Local History
Art Hotel Kaštieľ was built between 1766 and 1769 by Baron Ján Jesenák as an aristocratic country estate in the classicising Austrian Baroque style. The construction period, patron and original function provide specific historical reference points for the building. The stylistic designation adds an architectural classification to the history of the estate.
The chapel “Kaplnka sv. Kríža” in Tomášov is Neo-Gothic and was built at the end of the 19th century. Neo-Gothic revives Gothic forms in a later period of construction. As another religious building, the chapel complements the church with its own architectural style and a clearly defined period.
A restored wayside cross is considered an important local monument and is associated with the portrayal of Tomášov’s past. Its restoration was completed in 2021. The church, chapel and wayside cross offer different scales, spanning sacred architecture and local remembrance.
Parkland and Leisure
Art Hotel Kaštieľ has a 17-hectare English-style park. Information boards in the park explain the rare tree species, so the nature theme encompasses both plants and the park landscape. A herd of fallow deer has lived there since 2012.
The adventure golf course adds an activity to the historical and landscape themes. In good weather, it is open daily; admission is available at the Kaštieľ reception. The two leisure features are relevant to planning in different ways: the golf course is open daily in good weather, while before making a trip specifically to see fallow deer, you should check whether the herd currently lives in the park. This lets you consider the weather-dependent activity and the current presence of the animals separately.
