Chorvátsky Grob between the Šúr Nature Reserve and Slovak culture
Accommodation in Chorvátsky Grob
Chorvátsky Grob combines experiences in nature with a distinctive local history. The Šúr National Nature Reserve extends into the municipality’s cadastral area and provides access to a landscape where wetlands, rare flora and fauna, and the remains of an original marshy alder forest with peat bog are protected. At the same time, churches, ethnographic exhibits and living craft traditions tell the story of the area’s cultural development.
Šúr Nature Reserve and nature trail
For a clearly defined hiking or walking option, the “Prírodné klenoty Šúru” nature trail is available. It is 4.1 km long and includes six stations. Its route runs mainly through Panónsky háj; at the end, the nature trail reaches a road in Chorvátsky Grob, in the Čierna Voda district.
The Šúr National Nature Reserve covers 991 hectares. Anyone interested in wetlands and the plant and animal life protected there can choose the nature trail as a practical way to explore this landscape. For a different way to experience the surroundings, the Čierna Voda equestrian area offers individual riding lessons with an instructor for children and adults, as well as trail rides in the Šúr protected area. The area can be reached by car and by public transport via bus route 630.
Churches, local history and regional identity
An important cultural landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of “Christ the King”. It dates from 1589 and was created by rebuilding an older late Gothic sacred building. The church preserves a statue of the Virgin Mary from the second half of the 18th century and a monstrance from the early 16th century. Anyone interested in sacred art and historic village churches will find several eras brought together here in one specific place.
The Chapel of the Holy Trinity dates from 1880. The history of Chorvátsky Grob also includes the settlement of Croatian settlers by the Svätý Jur estate in the mid-16th century. This connection explains part of the area’s cultural character, which is also visible in the Chorvátska izba. The collection contains historical and ethnographic exhibits and presents examples of local craftsmanship and traditions.
Customs, crafts and events
Regional culture can also be seen in traditional clothing and handicrafts. A winter bridal dress from Chorvátsky Grob dates from the beginning of the 20th century. It consists of a blue wool skirt, a green bodice and a long mentieka. The tradition of making Slovenskogrobské lace continues to this day. In addition, the local folklore ensemble Chorvatanka celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2024.
Culinary and community events are also part of the local character. The Feast of Saint Urban was revived in 2014 and has been held annually ever since; it includes a tasting and presentation of local wines by VÍNO HUGO. The Grobský Runfest features 5 km and 12 km races, as well as children’s races, a food zone and a children’s zone. If you would like to plan your trip around nature, culture or a specific event, Chorvátsky Grob offers a range of different focuses.
