Miloslavov: Crafts, History and Landscape

Miloslavov combines the expansive landscape of the Danube Lowland with an unusually vivid local history. If you are looking for a smaller place for your trip to Slovakia with historical sites, traditional crafts and a short educational trail, you will encounter several distinct themes here: the former church building at Námestie sv. Alžbety, bell towers in two parks, memorial sites commemorating the founding of the municipality, and the district of Alžbetin Dvor with a cycle route to Dunajská Lužná.

Historical Traces in the Townscape

The oldest historical monument in Miloslavov is the former church building at Námestie sv. Alžbety. It was built no later than the beginning of the 14th century as a church dedicated to Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia. Today, the building is used as the Podunajský remeselný dvor. This brings together medieval architectural history and a living craft tradition in one place.

At the Podunajský remeselný dvor, blacksmiths, woodcarvers, weavers and potters from the surrounding area regularly demonstrate their work using original tools. At the same time, they pass their skills on to future generations. For individual visits, the courtyard is open from April to October on Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 16:00. The opening hours are therefore clearly limited to weekends and the months stated.

Bell Towers and Memorial Sites

The local history includes several smaller monuments with different backgrounds. The Zvonica Alžbetin Dvor stands in Alžbetin Park and was built by residents in 1947. Its structure originated from the construction of a wind pump belonging to the farmer Jirsák. In the past, it served as a death knell and as a fire warning signal. Sadová Park is also home to the Miloslavov bell tower, which the settlers built in 1935; it was the first steel tower of its kind in Miloslavov.

Near Lipový Park, a monument was erected in 2021 to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the municipality of Miloslavov. The founding assembly of the settlers of the Anna Majer colony took place at the Miloslavov Memorial Fountain on 29 June 1921. The colony was later renamed Miloslavov. Another historical point of reference is the Baptist prayer house, which was solemnly opened on 7 November 1926.

Educational Trail and the Landscape of Žitný ostrov

Miloslavov lies in the upper part of Žitný ostrov island in the Podunajská nížina Danube Lowland. This geographical setting shapes the landscape surrounding the town. In the district of Alžbetin Dvor, the Náučný chodník Miloslavov educational trail begins at the ramp on the corner of Južná and Agátová. The trail is approximately 500 m long and includes five panels. They cover the seasons, local trees, an animal-tracks maze, flowers, and parents and their young. The educational trail thus offers a focused introduction to the natural themes addressed directly, without claiming to be a long hiking route.

Cyclists will also find a specific point of reference: a cycle route was ceremonially opened, directly connecting Dunajská Lužná with the Miloslavov district of Alžbetin Dvor. In terms of local history, this route supplements the historical sites with a connection between the two named places.
