Vieska combines a long, historically documented past with a cultural and historical educational trail and a landscape between the Žiar Basin and the northwestern slopes of the Štiavnica Mountains. If you are looking for accommodation in Vieska and want to combine a place with a church and regional history with a short trip to Šášov Castle, the focus here is clearly on exploring on foot and on preserved evidence from different eras.

The Church of Christ the King as a historic focal point

A parish and a church are documented in Vieska for the years 1332 to 1337; Vieska was mentioned in written records in 1352. The Church of Christ the King is the parish church in the Vieska district of the municipality of Ladomerská Vieska. It was probably built as early as the 13th century and was originally dedicated to All Saints.

Part of the tower and the presbytery with a polygonal ending have been preserved from the original Gothic church building. The presbytery has a net-vaulted ceiling dated 1481. The church was rebuilt in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century, altered again in 1552 and extended with a transept in 1928. The tomb of Žigmund Dóczy is located in a crypt beneath the church. Above the portal of the original Gothic presbytery hangs a circular, wooden polychrome epitaph of Žigmund Dóczy from 1647. It displays his coat of arms and bears a surrounding Latin inscription.

The original church furnishings also include a late Gothic bell, probably dating from the first half of the 16th century. A consecration cross has been preserved as a wall painting from the late 14th century on the western interior wall of the Gothic presbytery. For your planning, it is important to note that work is currently being carried out at the church of the Ladomerská Vieska parish. The restoration includes the roof, façade and interior.

Educational trail to Šášov Castle

The Ladomerská Vieska–Šášov educational trail runs through Ladomerská Vieska and Šášovské Podhradie and ends at Šášov Castle. It is three kilometres long and has five stations, including the church in Vieska. In terms of content, the educational trail presents cultural and historical sights in Ladomerská Vieska and Šášovské Podhradie. It therefore connects the locality with a specific excursion without limiting you to a purely castle-focused visit: the route is also suitable for history-oriented outdoor lessons.

There is also an easy hike in the vicinity of the host municipality to the nearby municipality of Šášovské Podhradie. It is particularly suitable for families with children. Vieska thus offers a short, clearly defined introduction to history and the landscape, while the church itself reveals several construction phases and preserved furnishings.

Location between transport routes and a historic landscape

The host municipality of Ladomerská Vieska lies in the Žiar Basin and extends to the northwestern slopes of the Štiavnica Mountains. At the same time, it is located at a crossroads of roads along the main Bratislava–Košice–Trenčín corridor. The main railway line towards Bratislava and Zvolen passes through the cadastral area. Historically, Vieska was a border settlement on the edge of the Beòadický and Šášovský estates. It has also been handed down that residents of Vieska traded fruit and vegetables in Kremnica.
