Trnavá Hora between Mountain Valleys and Culture

Trnavá Hora combines distinctive landscapes with a compact, diverse local setting. The municipality extends into the Kremnica Mountains and the Štiavnica Mountains. Trnavá Hora itself lies on the southern slope of the Kremnica Mountains, while Kľačany is located in the eastern part of this mountain range. Jalná, by contrast, lies on the northern slopes of the Štiavnica Mountains in a narrow valley of the Hron. This means that different types of landscape can be found within the municipality, without grouping the place names together into a single mountain region.

Hiking and Cycling around Kľačany

One specific hiking option starts at the bus stop near the parish office in Trnavá Hora: this is where the yellow-and-red-marked Budiná hiking trail begins. It leads through Kľačany to a forest hut, where it turns sharply towards the Budiná spring. It then continues through the Hrabíky Valley to the Snoža spring before descending to the trail junction at Jastrabský mlyn.

For a different active perspective, the route through the Kľačianska Valley is recommended to cyclists. This allows you to explore the natural surroundings not only along a marked hiking trail but also on a route expressly recommended for cycling. Specific distance or difficulty information is not available for this selection.

Church, Monument and a Special Village Square

The parish church of Saint John of Nepomuk is a notable feature of Trnavá Hora. It dates from 1775 and was built in the Baroque-Classical style. It is also listed as a cultural monument. The sacred building therefore combines a precisely dated structure with officially recognized heritage status.

A distinct culture of remembrance is represented by Námestíčko Mekyho Žbirku. The small square lies below the wall of his father's birthplace at the beginning of the upper part of Trnavá Hora. It is marked by a bust of Miroslav “Miro” Žbirka, created by Mgr. Art. Svetozár Ilavský. Beneath it is a symbolic Bratislava bench. In Kľačany, the SNP monument also commemorates Peter Kubík, an interbrigadist and commander of the 1st Battalion of Captain Ján Nálepka's partisan brigade. He fell there on 10 October 1944 while fighting against the German occupiers.

Crafts, Nativity Scenes and Regional Events

A wooden nativity scene exhibition has been on display at the cultural centre in Jalná since 23 December 2007. If you are interested in religious folk art and craft traditions, it complements a visit to the parish church with a different cultural focus. In Kľačany, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus also features a wall design by Hanula.

At its 2024 edition, the event “Starosvetská mlatba a remeslá” demonstrated traditional activities and dishes. Adults and children could try pottery, grain threshing, sheaf tying and blacksmithing, among other activities. The offerings also included goulash, including pork and tripe goulash, buchty, strudel, curd cake and other homemade specialities. In 2026, the 15th edition took place in Kľačany under the subtitle “Starším pre spomienku, mladým pre poučenie”. This information refers to the editions mentioned and does not establish a future event date.

The Hron and a Destination for Children

The Hron flows through Trnavá Hora. During the summer months, it offers water sports enthusiasts the opportunity to navigate it. Tralaland is another notable name for families: it is the first children's holiday republic, approximately 1.5 km from the village of Trnavá Hora, in the direction of Jastrabá in a valley of the Kremnica Mountains. Together with the hiking route, the recommended cycling route and the cultural sites, this creates a destination where natural, historical and family-oriented attractions stand side by side.

Other Places for Orientation
