Sklené Teplice – Thermal Springs, Spa Park and Castle Trail
Accommodation in Sklené Teplice
Sklené Teplice is located in the northwestern part of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, in the valley of the Teplá stream. The town combines a long thermal tradition with a spa park, historic buildings and hiking opportunities. If you would like to combine relaxation, culture and activity during your trip to Slovakia, Sklené Teplice offers different ways to do so.
A thermal tradition with distinctive bathing facilities
The thermal springs of Sklené Teplice have a water temperature of 28 to 53 °C. Kúpele Sklené Teplice are among the oldest spa resorts in Slovakia. Parenica is particularly extraordinary: the naturally formed cave steam bath contains hyperthermal water at 42 °C and is considered a Slovak and European rarity. The water in the cave bath comes directly from a thermal spring.
Other facilities also demonstrate the special connection between thermal water and design. Kúpeľ Márie Terézie is a thermal pool designed in the classical style, with a stained-glass section in the roof. Banský kúpeľ contains a replica of Botticelli’s fresco “The Birth of Venus.” The Termálne kúpalisko Sklené Teplice thermal bathing complex also includes a children’s pool with a water temperature of 32 °C. If you are travelling with children, you can incorporate this specific offering into your daily plans without having to structure your entire stay around a single theme.
Spa park, café and the history of the spa town
The spa park extends along the valley and gradually transitions into a forest park. It offers easy walks in pleasant surroundings. Visitors can sample healing mineral springs in the park; behind the Goethe spa house is a small lake. Quiet areas with benches and pavilions complete the setting. This makes the spa park a peaceful part of a day in which you would like to combine the thermal facilities with time outdoors.
One of the defining buildings is the Kursalon. It was built between 1837 and 1839 as a classical-style spa pavilion with a circular floor plan. The historic building of the Kursalon Café offers coffee, soft drinks and cakes from an in-house bakery. The town’s history goes back further: alkaline-gypsum mineral springs with a cave bath were already known in the 16th century. The classical-style Church of Saint Luke was built between 1807 and 1811. Ignác Anton von Born also commissioned an amalgamation works in Sklené Teplice.
Hiking to Teplica Castle and along the Barborská cesta
For a hike with a historic destination, a trail to Teplica Castle begins in Sklené Teplice. It first follows the yellow-marked trail and then joins the green-marked trail to the ruins. The remains of Teplica Castle lie in the hills above Sklené Teplice and date from the 14th century. The hike is considered moderately difficult. Allow approximately two hours for the route, which is about 4.7 kilometres long. Take these details into account when planning your day and choose this tour if you would like to combine nature with a medieval destination.
A longer option is the fifth stage of the Barborská cesta. It connects Sklené Teplice with Banská Štiavnica and is 12.8 kilometres long. This gives you two differently designed hiking options: the described trail to the castle ruins and a stage connecting Sklené Teplice with Banská Štiavnica. As a geographical reference point for your journey, Hliník nad Hronom railway station is 8 km from Sklené Teplice.
Which accommodation location suits your trip
