Horná Ždaňa: Landscape, Trails and Local Culture
Accommodation in Horná Ždaňa
Horná Ždaňa between Vtáčnik and the Prochotský Stream
Horná Ždaňa combines a clearly defined landscape with historical landmarks and marked routes. The municipality extends along the eastern slopes of the Vtáčnik Mountains in the valley of the Prochotský Stream. The stream forms the municipality’s natural axis and gives the place a comprehensible landscape setting. For arrival orientation, the regional bus timetable lists the “Horná Ždaňa, OcÚ” stop with platform 2.
Church, Monument and Mlynská usadlosť
A significant cultural landmark is the church of Horná Ždaňa. It was built towards the end of the 16th century by the landowner Andrej Dóczy and extended in 1720. The church tower contains bells from 1659, 1720 and 1923. The dates make it apparent that several historical periods can be read from this building, without implying that it is currently accessible or operated as a visitor site.
The SNP Monument is located in front of the municipal office. It is considered a cultural monument of historical and artistic significance. Another special feature is Mlynská usadlosť. It is considered a work of vernacular architecture from the 20th century and was rebuilt in the 1940s. As a water mill and cultural monument, it is associated with ÚZPF identification number 10494.
Living traditions are also part of the local character. During Stavanie mája 2026, young men in Horná Ždaňa erected a maypole for the local girls. The municipality presented the event as a way of preserving the traditions and customs of their ancestors. This event is an example from 2026 and is not a statement about a future event date.
Marked Options for Cycling and Hiking
If you would like to explore the surroundings on a designated route, the route information offers two differently designed options. A marked cycling tour leads from Žiar nad Hronom via Dolná Trnávka, Dolná Ždaňa and Horná Ždaňa to Prochot. Its length is approximately 16 km plus the return journey. The approximate figure remains important: the 16 km refers to the designated route, while the return journey must be considered separately.
For hiking, the route between Hliník nad Hronom and Horná Ždaňa is listed as 11.3 km. It bears route number 8519 and is maintained by KST. Compared with the cycling tour, this is a differently designed connection with clearly named starting and destination points. The “Splav Hrona” activity is also associated with a municipal plan for Horná Ždaňa.
