Kremnické Bane is located in the Kremnica Mountains, in a valley at an elevation of 700 to 800 m above sea level. The village combines a long mining history with churches, historic miners’ houses, distinctive landscape features and trails that make this past tangible. This makes the village particularly appealing to travellers who want to get to know a Slovak cultural landscape not only through individual sights, but also through their historical connections.

Mining History and the Historic Village Structure

Kremnické Bane was established as an originally German mining settlement and was first mentioned in 1361. During the Austro-Hungarian period, the village became a centre of lace production. In the 1890s, it was also home to an institutionally organised lace-making school. Another link between technology and mining history is the 20 km-long mining water conduit from the 15th century, which carries water to the reservoirs of Kremnické Bane.

The historic village structure includes an ensemble of single- and two-storey miners’ houses with hipped roofs and shingle roofing dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Along the educational trail “Po stopách baníckej činnosti Kremnica–Kremnické Bane”, only the ruins of the original miners’ houses remain today. The trail system consists of three main routes and three secondary routes and presents the mining history of the region. Part of Kremnické Bane was designated a rural heritage conservation zone by Decree No. 1/1994 of the District Office of Žiar nad Hronom in order to preserve the village’s cultural values permanently.

Church, Chapel and Protected Cultural Heritage

A central historic building is the church “Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa”. It is a three-nave Gothic building from the second half of the 13th century and was originally built as a Romanesque rotunda. The star-ribbed vault of the rotunda, dating from the 15th century, has largely survived to this day. Above the village, next to this Gothic church, there is a symbolic centre of Europe.

The chapel “Kaplnka Narodenia Panny Márie” is also part of the area’s sacred history. It was originally a Baroque chapel dating from 1726 and was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in 1910. Inside is a folk-style wood carving of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 18th century. Together with the church, chapel and miners’ houses, it forms a village landscape in which different periods and aspects of regional history stand side by side.

Rocks, Views and Trails

The Trnovník rock, also known as Dornstein or Dorn Stein, is located near the church. At 990 m, it is the highest point in the local cadastral area. Trnovník offers views south as far as Banská Štiavnica and north towards the ridge of the Malá Fatra. The hiking trail “Cesta hrdinov SNP” also reflects the connection between landscape and history: it passes through Kremnické Bane and branches off there towards the church “Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa”.

Traditions Throughout the Year

Local cultural life includes recurring customs. During the carnival season, a masked procession takes place every year in Kremnické Bane. Traditional goulash, among other things, is served at the annual Jánska vatra celebration. These events complement the enduring historic buildings and trails with activities rooted in the village’s annual cycle.
