Dolná Ždaňa: Linear Village, Church and Landscape around Vtáčnik
Accommodation in Dolná Ždaňa
Dolná Ždaňa has preserved the character of a traditional linear village with authentic folk architecture. This makes the village particularly appealing if, during a trip to Slovakia, you want to experience not only individual sights but also a clearly recognizable village setting. The historic impression is created above all by the buildings and the combination of the church, public greenery, watercourse and surrounding landscape.
Folk Architecture and Local History
In the lower part of Dolná Ždaňa stand three-room houses built of stone. They date from the construction period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and make a specific era of local architectural history visible. However, the village’s development goes back further: Dolná Ždaňa was established in the mid-14th century and belonged to the estate of Revište Castle.
The cultural character of the village also includes several individual memorials and religious landmarks. Dolná Ždaňa has a roadside statue of Saint Florian and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. A memorial plaque commemorates citizens who were tortured and killed in the Second World War. Another memorial plaque is dedicated to the writer Elena Čepčeková. These sites create different points of emphasis: religious sculptures stand alongside local remembrance and the connection to the writer Elena Čepčeková.
The Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1847 in a Classical style with surviving Baroque elements. The building is single-naved, has a polygonal presbytery ending and a tower integrated into the gable façade. Inside, a small side altar with sculptural drapery and six small sculptures from the mid-19th century have been preserved. The church therefore offers not only a date of construction but also specific architectural and artistic details to look out for when exploring the village.
Landscape between the Hron and Vtáčnik
The western part of the Dolná Ždaňa municipal area lies on the eastern slopes of the Vtáčnik mountain range, which consists predominantly of andesite. The slopes associated with Dolná Ždaňa are covered by fir and beech forests. The right bank of the Hron River also lies within the municipal area; the Prochotský potok stream flows through it. Medokýš is designated as a mineral spring in Dolná Ždaňa.
The centre is formed by a public space defined by the church, a small park and public greenery. The Prochotský potok flows through this space, and a local road also passes through it. This provides a clearly documented focal point for orientation in the village, where several of Dolná Ždaňa’s defining elements come together.
