Stará Kremnička between Mountains, Trails and History

Stará Kremnička lies in the southwest of the Kremnica Mountains, in the Jastrabská vrchovina highlands and in the valley of the Kremnický potok. The surrounding area is predominantly characterised by deciduous forests, with mixed forests in some places. Numerous springs and spring fountains are just as much a part of the landscape as wild berries, mushrooms and wildlife. If you are looking for a place for your trip to Slovakia where natural surroundings, hiking trails and regional history are closely connected, Stará Kremnička offers several different points of access to these themes.

Educational Trail and Mountain Panorama

The Náučný chodník Kamenica educational trail follows an approximately 6 km circular route through the surrounding area; the walking time is around three hours. Six stations combine historical, natural-science and geological information. The sixth station is the “Žel. zastávka Stará Kremnička” stop, giving the educational trail a clearly defined connection to the local railway line.

A prominent point along the trail is Kamenica mountain, which reaches a height of 525 m. From there, the panoramic view extends over Kremnica, the centre of Europe, the Kremnica Mountains, the Žiarska kotlina basin, the Vtáčnik Mountains, Pohronský Inovec and the Štiavnické vrchy hills. Whether you are choosing a manageable circular route or a longer tour, the area therefore offers different scales of experience without reducing the landscape to a single excursion destination.

The Barborská cesta through Stará Kremnička

Stará Kremnička also lies on the fourth stage of the Barborská cesta between Kremnica and Sklené Teplice. The entire circular route is 183 km long and divided into nine stages; it can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The route provides insights into the region’s mining history and into the extraction and processing of metallurgical ores. It therefore complements the natural and scenic impressions with a subject that has shaped the history of the Kremnica Mountains.

Church, Mining Monument and Railway History

The local cultural landmarks include the “Kostol sv. Imricha” church. It was built in 1890 on the site of a church that had been destroyed by fire in 1888, and it remains in use. Another registered object is “KOMÍN – vetracia šachta Hlavnej dedičnej štôlne” near house no. 112, under ÚZPF number 2728/1. The designation points to the site’s mining context; beyond its status as a registered object, it makes no statement about the possibility of visiting it.

The railway is also part of Stará Kremnička’s identity. The Zvolen–Vrútky railway line runs along the village and is known by the nickname “Slovak Semmering”. Stará Kremnička railway station was built between 1911 and 1915. The site’s eventful history also includes the fact that the Štefánik armoured train first saw combat near Stará Kremnička during the Slovak National Uprising.
