Kremnica – Castle, Mining and Calvary
Accommodation in Kremnica
Kremnica combines a historic town centre with mining history, museums, sacred architecture and experiences in the surrounding landscape. The town reveals several different sides: the castle focuses on medieval architectural history and exhibitions, while the area around the Calvary combines chapels, an educational trail and viewpoints, and the nearby Skalka arena also offers winter sports opportunities.
Castle, Town Walls and Special Collections
Kremnica Castle is a national cultural monument. It consists of buildings dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, protected by a double wall. At the centre of the complex stands the Gothic Church of St Catherine, dedicated to the town’s patron saint and featuring a Neo-Gothic interior. Every year, it serves as the venue for the European Organ Festival Kremnický hradný organ.
Several exhibitions add to the picture of the castle. The Small Tower houses the exhibition “Kremnické zvony a zvonolejári” about Kremnica’s bells and bell founders; audio recordings of local bells are also part of the exhibition. The former town hall of Kremnica Castle now houses the exhibition “Barokové plastiky”. The former guardroom is open to visitors. A spiral staircase with 127 steps leads to panoramic views of the town and the surrounding hills.
The town’s historical character can also be traced beyond the castle. Kremnica’s historic centre is surrounded by a stone fortification wall that connects to the fortifications of the castle grounds and is 5 to 7 metres high in places. The historic circular trail leads through the heart of this town centre. In the Bürgerhaus, an exhibition displays 138 painted shooting targets from 1837 to 1896; it is considered the third-largest collection of its kind in Slovakia. The Múzeum gýča contains more than 4,000 exhibits and offers visitor groups specially guided tours of its collection.
Mining History to See and Experience
The Kremnica Mint received the right to mint coins in 1328 and is among the world’s oldest continuously operating companies. At its exhibition, visitors can tour the historic mint and strike a token themselves on a historic coining machine known as a balancier.
At the Mining Museum in the Andrej adit, visitors can access part of Kremnica’s underground mine workings. During the tour, they pass workplaces from various eras and eventually reach a presentation of the 16th century. The route “Po stopách banĂckej ÄŤinnosti” offers another perspective on former mineral extraction: this easy walk passes through former gold- and silver-mining areas and combines nature with Kremnica’s mining history.
Calvary, Views and Winter Experiences
Kremnica’s Calvary comprises 14 Stations of the Cross chapels and the Church of the Holy Cross. It is situated in a 10-hectare, architecturally designed landscape complex used as a place for recreation and relaxation. The climb forms part of an educational trail leading to a lookout tower. In favourable weather, the view from there reaches Kremnický Štós, Skalka, Kremnické Bane, Jarabica and Sitno in the Štiavnica Mountains.
Those wishing to combine their stay with winter sports will find the Skalka arena near Kremnica. It offers more than 5 km of downhill runs and almost 60 km of cross-country ski trails. Alongside historical sightseeing, this provides a choice of two different forms of winter sport.
Festival and Local Speciality
Since 1981, the Kremnické Gagy festival has taken place on the last weekend of August as an international festival of humour and satire. In the town centre, more than ten stages and platforms host theatre, music, puppetry, visual arts, pantomime, clowning, recitation and street art from Slovakia and many European countries.
A culinary speciality is Atkáryho kremnické krumple. In the historic confectionery workshop, visitors can buy and taste this speciality and watch it being made. In this way, a local craft tradition complements Kremnica’s historical, cultural and landscape impressions.
