Veľká Čalomija – Culture, History and the Ipeľ
Accommodation in Veľká Čalomija
Veľká Čalomija combines the landscape of the Ipeľ with an unusually multifaceted local history. The Ipeľ River flows through the municipality and at the same time forms the border with Hungary. Anyone looking for a place in Slovakia with sacred architecture, a culture of remembrance and tangible historical traces will find several different points of interest here – from the medieval Pustý kostol to a reconstructed military bunker.
Pustý kostol and a Medieval Find
Pustý kostol lies north of Veľká Čalomija in a small wooded area. Archaeological investigations dated the site to the first half of the 13th century. What remains is identified as a single-nave Romanesque church with an apse facing east. The site is marked by information boards on the main road and at the church; a prepared road leads there. This means that orientation on site is described not only by the historical name but also by the specific route.
A medieval bronze aquamanile depicting an armed rider on horseback was found near Pustý kostol in 1947. The artefact discovered near Veľká Čalomija is housed in the Stredoslovenské múzeum in Banská Bystrica. The find expands the perspective on Pustý kostol with a single object preserved elsewhere in the region, while the church itself remains anchored at its historic location within the municipality.
Military History and the Village Museum
Another historical layer is represented by the reinforced-concrete military bunker in Veľká Čalomija. It was built in 1937, served to protect the former Czechoslovak border and was used as a light fortification during the Second World War. The bunker was reconstructed in 2021 and is currently open to visitors. The municipality therefore has a specific place where the history of border protection can be followed without limiting it to a single era.
The local village museum opened in 2009. The house, consisting of three rooms, displays antique furniture, contemporary traditional costumes, photographs, pictures and tools used by earlier generations. The museum grounds also include a summer kitchen, a brick-vaulted cellar, a shaft well, a pond, a courtyard oven and a shelter. These areas are used for barbecuing, entertainment or quiet relaxation. The museum thus combines everyday objects indoors with an illustrative farmyard setting.
Churches, Events and Remembrance
The village's cultural landmarks also include two 20th-century churches. The Church of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1911 in the Secession style. Its interior wall painting has been restored; the original painting was created by Gyula Ádám in 1932. The Protestant church was built in 1934 according to plans by a Czech architect, using Hussite architectural elements. Both buildings therefore represent different ecclesiastical and architectural traditions within the local history.
Various cultural events take place every year in the local amphitheatre. The venue has a covered stage and covered spectator seating. Another place of remembrance is the municipal cemetery with the renovated grave of the Polish soldier Andrzej Paruch. Memorial plaques in Veľká Čalomija also commemorate Polish refugees from the Second World War. These places also make the more recent history and the links between the municipality and the events of the war visible.
Sports Routes and Water Activities
Asphalt and dirt roads are available for exercise within the municipality and are suitable for sporting activities. At the boat dock in Veľká Čalomija, you can rent kayaks and canoes, including the necessary equipment, by prior arrangement. The prior arrangement is expressly part of the offer and should be taken into account when planning. In this way, sports routes and an organised opportunity on the water complement the cultural and historical themes of the village.
