Kamenné Kosihy
Kamenné Kosihy between village history and the hills
Kamenné Kosihy lies in a flat valley of the Studienka stream. The municipal area includes unforested hills with flat, dissected ridges. The surface is shaped by deposits from the younger Tertiary, a geological period. If you are looking for a place in Slovakia with a manageable village structure, visible historical traces, and a rural landscape, you will encounter the themes of village history, the church, and the countryside here.
Kamenné Kosihy is documented in writing as early as 1135 as a possession of the monastery in Bzovík. Its older history is not limited to a date: preserved farmhouses from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, together with their outbuildings, represent the village’s former agricultural character. The inhabitants worked in agriculture, viticulture, and fruit growing.
St. Martin’s Church in the village center
The most prominent cultural landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin. It was built in 1824 in the Classical style and stands on a hill in the village center on the main road. Inside is a large altarpiece measuring 2 m × 3 m, depicting the patron saint, St. Martin. For orientation in the village, the church thus combines a clearly specified location with a specific art-historical detail.
Local commemorative culture also includes a memorial plaque that the municipality erected in 2005 in memory of a Keszi gathering. A white marble slab marks the grave of Lipcsey Sándor. A central cross stands in the New Cemetery, which was established in the northwestern part of the municipality. The new, or upper, cemetery also contains a black marble obelisk dedicated to the priest Fodor Jenő (1867–1927). It is decorated with a cross, a chalice, a book, a stole, a head of Christ, and floral motifs.
Preserved houses and historical traces
In addition to the farmhouses, the old, well-preserved vicarage of Kőkeszi is still standing today. The former manor house of the Lipcsei landowning family stood next to the present-day cultural center. The wording “former manor house” is important here: what has been passed down is its former location next to today’s cultural center, not a current use of the manor house.
These architectural traces complement the church-related memorial sites with the residential and working history of the municipality. Those interested in rural architecture will therefore find not only a single religious building, but also evidence of former economic practices and the development of the village.
Events and religious tradition
On July 20, 2024, Kamenné Kosihy hosted the festival described as traditional, Palóc dishes. Competitors from Hungary also took part. All-day adoration is scheduled at St. Martin’s Church for April 26. The two details belong to different areas of local life: the festival points to the region’s food culture, while the adoration highlights the religious character of the church.
If you would like to visit other places in Slovakia in addition to Kamenné Kosihy, you can also find Vinica, Ľuboriečka, Chrťany, Horná Strehová, Kleňany, Balog Nad Ipľom, Slovenské Ďarmoty and Lesenice.
