Viticulture and History in Vinica

Vinica combines viticulture, a long-established local history and a clearly described hike through the landscape. The village lies in the Ipeľ Basin on the edge of the Krupina Plain and on the Veľký potok River. Its local character includes mineral springs and alkaline drinking water; Vinica also has a swimming pool or bathing facility.

Vinica was formerly called Nekyje and is counted among the oldest villages in the Hont region. It was mentioned in a document dating from 1135: Lampert and his wife Žofia then donated their property in the village to Bzovík Monastery. The same records are regarded as the oldest evidence both of Vinica's settlement and of viticulture there.

This connection remains visible today through wine events and wineries. The Oberačkové slávnosti are held annually in Vinica. The Csernus family winery and its vineyards are located above the village on the southern slopes of the volcanic Guard Mountain. The winery offers intimate wine tastings featuring local wines and expert advice. At VinFest Vinica 2025, the programme on 10 May 2025 at 18:00 at the Vinica Cultural Centre included a public wine tasting with the announcement of the results. The organiser was the civic association NEKVINUM; VinFest was a nomination exhibition for the National Salon of Wines of the Slovak Republic 2025.

Cultural Heritage Between Tájház and the Church

For a cultural and historical tour, Vinica offers several different points of interest. The village museum, the Tájház House of Folk Culture, opened its doors in 2011. The cultural heritage also includes a chapel from the late 18th century, an originally late-Baroque manor house with a stone portal dated 1780 and a Neoclassical manor house from the first half of the 19th century.

The Church of Saint Stephen the King stands on foundations dating from the 16th century and was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style between 1840 and 1846. Inside are a Renaissance baptismal font from the second half of the 16th century with a petal relief on a square base, as well as a glazed Rococo reliquary from the second half of the 18th century containing a small wooden folk Pietà. This makes it possible to trace the village's history not only through dates, but also through preserved architectural and furnishing details.

Stráž Educational Trail: Loop Trail with an Observation Tower

The Náučný chodník Stráž Educational Trail connects Žobrák, Žabí prameň, the Stráž observation tower, the southern slope of Porgy and Biela studňa on a loop route through Vinica. It is 7.3 km long, has an elevation gain of 250 metres and takes 3.5 hours to walk. The Tájház, the House of Folk Culture in Vinica, is the starting point of the educational trail.

For the stated access route, take the bus to the stop by the Vinica Cultural Centre. From there, the path leads approximately 300 metres westwards along Nekyjská Street. The route thus connects a fixed starting point in the village with several named landscape features. The vineyards in the Žobrák locality contain around 500 vineyard cottages. The wooden Stráž observation tower dates from 2013; beneath it are small pseudokarst caves in fractured andesite and andesite breccia.

The combination of the House of Folk Culture, vineyards, observation tower and church furnishings makes the differences between the possible focuses of a stay concrete, without reducing Vinica to just one attraction.
