Stredné Plachtince lies on the eastern edge of the picturesque Hont region along the Plachtinský potok stream, formerly also known as the “Stará rieka”. The Slovak destination combines a landscape shaped by waterways and thermophilous habitats with churches, a museum in the old rectory, archaeological traces and living traditions. As a result, attention here is focused less on a single attraction than on the interplay of nature, history and local culture.

Landscape and the Pohanský vrch educational trail

A narrow strip of floodplain forest with willows, poplars and alders runs along the Plachtinský potok. Another distinctive landscape feature is the thermophilous rock communities documented near Hrobárovo and near Fojtíkovo and Chvíranovo bralo. Pohanský vrch is also one of the ecologically significant gene-pool localities of flora and fauna.

The Pohanský vrch educational trail lies on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Horné Plachtince and Stredné Plachtince. In 1998, an educational trail to Pohanský vrch and the Hornoplachtinské lazy was established. The Pohanský vrch archaeological site lies along its route and combines cultural-historical and natural or landscape-related values. Thus, archaeological evidence and the area’s distinctive landscape come together directly in a documented thematic setting.

Churches, historic buildings and memorial sites

The local Gothic Protestant church dates from the 14th to the 15th century. In the 17th century, it was altered in the Renaissance style, rebuilt in the Neoclassical style in 1925 and enclosed by a wall. The tombstones of the Dačov family are located next to the church. The tombstone of the Protestant pastor Samuel Godra (1807–1873), a poet and representative of the Slovak national movement, also stands there.

The Church of St Michael in Stredné Plachtince has a distinct historical development. A Gothic chapel is traditionally believed to have already existed there between 1332 and 1337. It was rebuilt between 1610 and 1621, the altar area was created in 1626, the nave with the altar in 1742, and the 22-metre-high tower in 1832–1833. The architectural heritage also includes the old Dačov manor house, which later belonged to the Bende family and was remodelled in the 20th century.

Folk houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries preserve traditional rural building forms. These include plastered and whitewashed masonry as well as tiled roofs with half-hipped gables supported by wooden posts.

Samuel Godra Museum and local traditions

The Samuel Godra Museum is housed in the old rectory and provides an overview of the history of the Plachtinska Valley from the earliest times to the present. The objects on display include geological samples, fragments of Bronze Age Kyjatice culture pottery from the hillfort on Pohanský vrch, as well as other prehistoric and medieval archaeological finds.

A separate weaving room preserves machines and equipment used to process flax and hemp from raw material to finished product. The historical perspective is complemented by living folk culture: Bažalička preserves authentic folklore, local customs and traditions, as well as traditional dress, and regularly takes part in various folklore events in the region, other parts of Slovakia and abroad. The production of the Plachtince costume and embroidery has also been preserved as part of local folk culture and traditions.

Traditional events and food

The traditional programme Plachtinský Keľavník includes a storytelling walk in traditional costumes from Plachtince and various tasks that convey the everyday life of ancestors and local customs. Plachtinský Keľavník was held as a traditional event in Stredné Plachtince. Traditional dishes from Stredné Plachtince include tenkeľová kaša, kolaches, opekance and strudel or záviny.
