Kováčovce brings together nature and culture with horse culture and an agricultural tradition. The Hradište Nature Reserve, a Rococo-Classicist manor house, a distinctive depiction in the church and the grounds of the local riding club each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can explore the area through several specific interests: nature conservation, architectural and cultural history, or horses.

Hradište Nature Reserve

The Hradište Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Kováčovce. Its protected features include Pannonian grass and herb communities on loess. In 1999, the area was designated to protect several warmth-loving, steppe-related, protected and endangered plant and animal species. Both the habitat and species protection shape the natural character of Hradište.

Protected and endangered species include the tree bladder senna (Colutea arborescens), yellow bluestem (Chrysopogon gryllus) and Austrian flax (Linum austriacum). They also include the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), European green lizard (Lacerta viridis) and praying mantis (Mantis religiosa). The plant species are complemented by the animals listed, so the nature theme ranges from vegetation to specific protected species. For nature enthusiasts, Hradište is therefore a clearly defined point of interest. Unlike the manor house and church, the focus here is not on architectural or visual history, but on habitat and species protection.

Manor house, church and remembrance

Kováčovce is home to an 18th-century Rococo-Classicist manor house, which was altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its history therefore encompasses both its original construction and later changes. The Church of the Blessed Mother features the Nativity of the Virgin Mary: the child is surrounded by Saint Anne and Joachim and welcomed by angels. While the manor house’s style and alterations shape the cultural perspective, the religious scene is central to this church depiction.

A memorial plaque to Fraňo Kráľ, erected in 2005, is located at the community hall. It adds another cultural connection alongside the architecture and religious scene. Together, the manor house, church depiction and memorial plaque offer different points of interest for exploring the town’s architectural and cultural history.

Horse culture and agriculture

The Kováčovce Riding Club has an equestrian facility with stables, a sand-surfaced practice course and a grassy paddock. The club welcomes preschool and schoolchildren on excursions where they can learn about horse breeding, care and training. The focus is therefore not only on the facility, but also on education and working with horses. On 4 June 2022, the Ipeľský pohár equestrian competition took place in Kováčovce, organized by JO Kováčovce. The facility, children’s excursions and competition date illustrate different aspects of the horse theme: practice, learning and competition.

The agricultural tradition is also part of the town’s character. Agriculture, vegetable growing and viticulture were practised in Kováčovce; viticulture remained the most important occupation up to the present day. This adds an economic perspective to the nature and cultural themes.
