Ďurkovce combines a clearly recognizable landscape with an unusually multifaceted local history. The municipality lies in a shallow valley of the Ipeľ Basin at the southeastern foothills of the Krupinská planina. It extends on both sides of the Ďurkovský potok and has preserved its agricultural character to this day. For your travel planning, Ďurkovce is therefore particularly interesting as a small village whose distinctive features lie in its landscape, historical points of interest and local traditions.

Landscape between the Valley and the Wetland

The location gives Ďurkovce a distinctive spatial character: the shallow valley of the Ipeľ Basin meets the southeastern foothills of the Krupinská planina, while the Ďurkovský potok runs through the village on both sides. The documented natural features also include the “Ďurkovce pri osade Peťov” wetland. It covers 1.5 hectares and complements the village’s agricultural character with a clearly designated wetland habitat. If, when choosing a travel destination, you are looking not only for major sights but also for landscape character and local features, Ďurkovce offers a precise, small-scale perspective on these qualities.

Local History without a Church, but with Bell Towers

One distinctive feature of the village’s history is that Ďurkovce never had a church. Nevertheless, bell towers play an important role in the documented development of the village. Until 1990, only a wooden bell tower was used in Ďurkovce. A new bell tower was built in 1991. The “Harangláb Gyürkön” bell tower is located in the centre of Ďurkovce on the main road.

The history of the school also reflects the linguistic development of the village. After 1945, a school with Slovak as the language of instruction was established in Ďurkovce. Later, classes were also taught in Hungarian. Ďurkovce was first mentioned in 1262 under the name “Obec Gyurky”. Until the 19th century, the village was a noble estate of the Gyürki family.

Monuments and Crosses in the Village Landscape

At the beginning of the road to Ďurkovce, a simple wooden cross called “Gyürky-kereszt” stands on the right, featuring a painted figure of Christ and metal decorations, including a chalice. At the eastern entrance to the cemetery in Ďurkovce stand the grave monument and memorial plaque for Rákóczi Rozália. The grave monument is classified as a local monument, has been preserved and is in good condition.

A few steps from the cemetery entrance, there is also the simple metal cross called “Egry-kereszt”. It was created in 1988 and is located at 48.13573, 19.17526, a few metres from the cemetery entrance closer to the village, on the left side of the path to the funeral hall. The Egry Cross has been preserved and is well maintained. Thus, different forms of local remembrance stand side by side in Ďurkovce: a wooden cross at the beginning of the road, a cemetery monument with a memorial plaque and a newer metal cross with a precisely documented location.

Local Traditions and Further Orientation

Recurring community events are also part of the local cultural profile. Ďurkovce holds an annual sports afternoon for children and young people. The municipality also takes part every year in the festival of Palóc dishes in Kamenné Kosihy. These two references show different sides of the village: an event for the younger generation and an appearance connected with regional food culture.
