Horné Plachtince: Heritage Zone and Educational Trail on Pohanský vrch
Accommodation in Horné Plachtince
Heritage Zone of Horné Plachtince
Horné Plachtince combines remarkable cultural traces with an educational trail through the landscape. A designated heritage zone has been preserved in the village. Its special character includes the plot structure shown in maps from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. During a tour, this makes it possible not only to view individual examples of historic architecture, but also to understand the traditional layout of the village.
The protected area contains stone houses whose roofs, originally thatched with straw, were supported by wooden or masonry columns. Two traditional village houses are listed at house numbers 57 and 74 under heritage numbers 1682 and 11240. Behind the municipal office stands a wooden bell tower dating from 1737. The Evangelical church also preserves historic details: its interior furnishings date from the time the church was built, and the church bell bears the date 9 September 1737.
Pohanský vrch Educational Trail
The Pohanský vrch educational trail is ideal for active exploration. It begins near Horné Plachtince above the confluence of the Suchánsky potok and the Plachtinský potok, leads across the slopes of the southern spur of Pohanský vrch and around its summit, and returns to the starting point. The loop is 3.6 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 260 metres.
The educational trail is self-guided, designed as a loop, and can be walked in both directions. As a walking route, it is accessible year-round. Its content combines natural science, geology, palaeontology and cultural history. Its focus therefore lies not only on walking, but also on the different topics brought together along the route. Pohanský vrch is also classified as a genofond-important locality for flora and fauna.
This educational trail can be reached by bus to Horné Plachtince. From there, the route continues on foot for 1.7 kilometres along a local road northwards into the valley of the Plachtinský potok. This distance describes access to the starting point and should be distinguished from the length of the loop itself.
Other Natural and Cultural Traces
Another educational trail in the valley of the Suchánsky potok leads to Trúbiaci kameň. This is a rock formation with two openings through which a whistling sound is produced when air flows through. The combination of a geological peculiarity and an audible natural phenomenon creates a different focus from the thematically broader loop at Pohanský vrch.
Regional culture also remains present in Horné Plachtince. Bažalička is dedicated to preserving family and seasonal customs of eastern Hont, particularly in Príbelce and Plachtince. The Bažalička folk ensemble performs songs and dances at cultural events in Horné Plachtince and the wider surrounding area. In this way, living traditions complement the built heritage of the heritage zone.
