If you are looking for accommodation in Dolná Strehová, you can expect a place where thermal water, literary history, sacred architecture and a distinctive hilly landscape exist in close proximity. The cadastral area has thermal mineral springs. At the same time, flat, varied ridges formed from young Tertiary, partly tuffaceous deposits run through the landscape; oak and black locust woodland grows on steeper slopes. Dolná Strehová therefore offers different points of connection for a journey combining relaxation, culture and experiences in nature.

Thermal Water and the Landscape Around Dolná Strehová

A prominent feature of the cadastral area is the 332-metre-high Strážna hora on its southern boundary. The hill offers a good view of the Ipeľ River. The landscape is not merely a backdrop, but also helps explain the special character of the place: the gentle ridges, the wooded steeper slopes and the thermal springs are clearly distinguishable aspects of Dolná Strehová.

Kupko Strehová Aquatermal is the focal point for wellness. The facility has eight thermal-water pools. This water is supplied from three boreholes and emerges at 36°C. Aquatermal Strehová operates year-round. Those who place thermal water at the centre of their travel plans will therefore find a concrete complement here to the cultural themes of the place, without losing sight of the landscape or local history.

Imre Madách’s Manor House

Imre Madách’s manor house is a building erected at the end of the 18th century in the Rococo-Classical style. Its exterior and interior are well preserved. The building houses a literary-history exhibition in 11 rooms about Imre Madách and his work “The Tragedy of Man”. For visitors interested in literature, history and architecture, this offers a particularly clearly defined cultural experience.

The manor house also has a visitor centre with a museum educator, a small stage and a conference room. Upon request at the ticket office, the Slovak National Museum can arrange step-free access. This information is relevant for specific visit planning, but does not replace checking current conditions locally. Imre Madách’s grave is also located in the park next to the manor house.

Church, Renaissance Art and Local Culture

A second historical focal point is the Evangelical church in Dolná Strehová. It was built in 1652. Its protective wall, with loopholes, has survived to this day in the side walls and points to a building history in which sacred and defensive elements were combined. Inside there is a carved Renaissance wooden altar with seven biblical oil paintings.

The culture of the place extends beyond individual buildings. The Prameň folklore ensemble was established in 1995 and strives to preserve and pass on the folklore of the Podpoľanie region, which was influenced by Novohrad culture. There is also a poetry recitation competition called “Madáchova Strehová”. In Dolná Strehová, literary heritage and living cultural preservation thus meet in different forms.

Festivals and Events with Their Own History

The Hraný amatérsky humor festival, abbreviated to HAH, was established in 1990, still during the period of Czechoslovakia. The festival includes theatre, music, cabaret and stand-up performances, as well as competition screenings of amateur films. The festival’s 36th edition began in Dolná Strehová.

Sport is also part of the local events calendar. The tournament for the Dolná Strehová Mayor’s Cup reached its 49th edition. A football tournament for the Mayor’s Cup is organised in summer. This shows that the place is not only a destination for thermal water and culture, but also a venue for recurring local events.
