Dačov Lom combines traditional folk architecture with Protestant church history, crafts and folklore. It also features a specific named landscape location east of Strážnik, as well as a connection to downhill skiing. This mix can help you choose a focus for planning your trip: the historic buildings, local culture and natural surroundings offer different themes for a stay. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by deciding which of these themes you want to shape your time in Dačov Lom.

Folk Architecture with Distinct Dates

The house of Pavol Šajban, dating from 1812, is one of the few surviving examples of folk architecture in Dačov Lom. The chamber in the courtyard of Hlivárovcov-Fodorovských dates from 1819 and is considered the most interesting surviving example of this architecture in the village. The house and courtyard chamber offer two specific examples of local building history. Comparing them draws attention to different building forms within the surviving folk architecture and makes this part of the village’s history tangible.

Protestant Church and Building History

Dačov Lom’s Protestant church was originally built in the mid-13th century in the Romanesque style. In 1713, its nave was given a painted wooden ceiling. A fragment of the Romanesque stone stepped portal with round mouldings has also been incorporated into and supplemented by the surrounding wall. The medieval origins, wooden ceiling and portal fragment thus represent different elements of the building’s history. The church is listed in the Central Register of the Monuments Fund of the Slovak Republic under number 610-1088/0. Visitor access may vary; check in advance if you are planning a visit.

Crafts and Folklore

Local traditions include making traditional Hont lace and folk costumes. Traditional crafts also include wickerwork made from willow rods, wooden tools and furniture, and objects made from horn. Alongside textile work, wickerwork, wood and horn offer distinct craft themes. Cattle and sheep farming, as well as cheese-making, are also part of Dačov Lom’s rural history.

A folklore group has been active in Dačov Lom for many years under the leadership of Štefánia Selská. It represents the municipality at cultural events in the surrounding area and further afield. Together with the local craft traditions, the group adds another facet to Dačov Lom’s culture: from individual crafts and materials to community folklore.

Landscape East of Strážnik

In the cadastral area of Dačov Lom, a gorge begins in a canyon on the slope at the western edge of the forest east of Strážnik and leads to the west bank of the Lahoš. Of the two springs that rise there, the lower one is known locally as Meričkovka. The slope, gorge and springs form a specific landscape setting, distinct from the village’s buildings and cultural traditions. If you are interested in landscape features and local names as well as architecture, this area offers a distinct natural connection to Dačov Lom.

Winter Activities and Practical Information

Dačov Lom is also associated with downhill skiing and two ski lifts. If skiing is a key factor in your trip, check in advance whether they are operating for the season. The village has a post office, a shop and a cultural centre. If you plan to visit any of these facilities, check their opening hours in advance.
