Modrý Kameň combines a listed castle complex with puppetry culture, religious traditions and a protected forest-steppe. This makes it possible to discover the town in different ways: from a cultural and historical perspective around Modrý Kameň Castle, during a museum visit, on a peaceful walk to the Calvary, or while taking in the heat-loving forest and steppe landscapes.

Modrý Kameň Castle and the history of the town

Modrý Kameň Castle is a valuable listed heritage complex. The ruins of the upper castle are structurally connected to the château in the adjacent lower bailey. The three-winged Baroque château was built in 1730 on the remains of the fortifications in the lower-bailey area. It is precisely this combination of different building phases that makes the castle complex an informative place for anyone who wants to view historical sites not merely as individual buildings, but as complexes that have evolved over time. Modrý Kameň Castle can be reached by car. From Modrý Kameň, you can get there on foot in approximately 20 minutes. This approximate time explicitly refers to the walk from the town to the castle; it is not an indication of the size of the castle complex or of any other route.

Puppetry, toys and sacred history

The Museum of Puppetry Cultures and Toys is dedicated to puppet theatre. Its exhibition provides insights into the history, development and present of this art form. The permanent exhibition includes “Hračky na Slovensku v 20. storočí”, which focuses on toys in Slovakia in the 20th century. The museum thus presents two different perspectives side by side: puppetry as a performing art and toys as cultural evidence. The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is also one of Modrý Kameň’s defining cultural monuments. The Neo-Romanesque Roman Catholic church dates from 1879. Its interior contains votive objects from the 18th century. This preserved historical trace complements the view of the castle and museum with a religious perspective.

Calvary and protected landscape

The Modrý Kameň Calvary invites visitors to take a peaceful walk through nature. At the foot of the Calvary, the faithful traditionally attend services during the Easter holidays; a pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary takes place there in September. The site thus combines a quiet path through the landscape with a religious tradition that is still documented today. For those interested in nature, the Modrý Kameň forest-steppe is a distinct point of interest. The protected area preserves natural heat-loving forest-steppe and forest communities in the Krupinská planina. The forest-steppe lies in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Modrý Kameň in the Veľký Krtíš District in the Banská Bystrica Region. It was designated a protected area in 1986 over an area of 12.1200 ha and is classified as an easy outing suitable for children as well. In addition, Modrý Kameň has one of the largest chestnut groves in the country. For additional orientation within the destination area, you can also view Malé Zlievce, Kováčovce, Dolná Strehová, Horné Strháre, Horná Strehová, Veľká Čalomija, Stredné Plachtince and Horné Plachtince .
