Horné Strháre combines a diverse sacred landscape with forested valleys, palaeontological traces and marked hiking opportunities. If you are looking for a place with specific cultural and natural attractions for your trip to Slovakia, you will find both historic buildings and a local exhibition here, as well as evidence of a remarkable fossil past.

Churches and Small Cultural-Historical Details

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a single-nave Baroque-Classical building from the late 18th century. The church was rebuilt in 1879, is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Inside, a Baroque painting of the Madonna from the first half of the 18th century has been preserved. The church therefore offers not only a historical date but also a specific detail of its furnishings.

The Protestant church dates from 1791 and is likewise designed as a simple single-nave building. It was extended between 1862 and 1865; a tower topped by a pyramidal finial also dates from this period. Inside is the altarpiece “Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane” by Ľudovít Ľ. Kubányi. Another unusual detail is preserved on the attic boards of house no. 134: they are decorated with painted tulips and an S-shaped frieze.

Valley, Forested Slopes and Fossil Finds

Horné Strháre lies in the erosion valley of the Stará rieka, also called Leštinský potok. The steep valley slopes and small gorges around the village are covered with acacia and oak woodland. Its geological character also includes a sand pit located about 1 km west of Horné Strháre, which is described as a palaeontological site. Shark teeth predominated among the fossils at the palaeontological sites of Horné Strháre.

Horné Strháre is one of the well-known geological and palaeontological sites that have yielded a rich fossil fauna and flora in the past. Those who would like to learn more about this aspect of the village can find a local exhibition at the municipal office. A collection of fossil shark teeth can also be viewed there. Visiting the exhibition and exploring the landscape with its wooded ravines offer different perspectives: one focuses on tangible local evidence, while the other concerns the geological history associated with the village.

The traditional history of the village includes fruit growing, viticulture and beekeeping. The production of straw and willow-woven products was also part of the local craft traditions. The cultural life of Horné Strháre is also shaped by the local women’s folklore group “Strháranka”. These topics complement the churches and palaeontological finds with insights into livelihoods, crafts and living culture.
