Tajov: Nature, Historic Mining Trail and Cultural History

Tajov combines a protected natural formation, traces of a historic mining trail and a distinctive local cultural history. Natural Formations and Trails around Tajov

Tajovská kopa is a protected natural formation near the municipality of Tajov in the Kremnica Mountains. The 18-metre-high travertine mound lies on a slope and includes a cascade-like waterfall as well as dripstone formations. These dripstone formations were created by calcareous water flowing downwards. At Tajovská kopa, therefore, the focus is not only on the shape of the rock, but also on the natural process that shaped its appearance.

From Tajov, Tajovská kopa can be reached in about 15 minutes via the yellow-marked hiking trail in the direction of Suchý vrch. For orientation, the key point is therefore the direction from Tajov.

Another access point concerns the Görgeyho Tunnel. From the Banská Bystrica side, it can be accessed via a yellow-marked trail from the car park near the former Sokol or State Lodge above Tajov. The old Görgeyho Tunnel is located high in the Kremnica Mountains on a historic mining trail between Kremnica and Banská Bystrica. Today, it serves as a popular passage for hikers and cyclists, as well as for cross-country skiers in winter. In contrast to Tajovská kopa, the central theme here is therefore not a natural formation, but the connection between mining history and present-day use by various means of transport.

Church and Bells in Tajov

The Roman Catholic Church of Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa in Tajov is considered the oldest cultural and historical monument in the municipality. It was reconstructed in the 18th century in the Renaissance-Baroque style. A particularly specific detail can be found in the church tower: it houses the large bell of Saint Ignatius from 1771. In addition, there are two newer bells from 1922. The church can therefore be understood both through its historical significance for the municipality and through the preserved dates of its bells.

Literary and Municipal History

The Pamätný dom Jozefa Gregora Tajovského is located in the writer's wooden birthplace. The exhibition is dedicated to the history of Tajov and notable figures from the municipality. One focus is on the literary connections of Jozef Gregor Tajovský and his wife Hana Gregorová, who worked as a writer and translator. The memorial site thus complements the architectural and landscape themes with an explicitly literary perspective.

There is also a small exhibition about Jozef Murgaš in the entrance area of the Pamätný dom Jozefa Gregora Tajovského. The inventor, painter and priest who was born in Tajov adds another biographical facet to the view of the locality's notable figures.
