Vlkanová: Culture, Hiking and Cycling on the Hron
Vlkanová combines a reconstructed Renaissance manor house from the 17th century with marked hiking trails, the flat FAMILY TRAIL and experiences on the Hron. This creates a destination where culture and activity can be combined in different ways: from the Renaissance manor house and the ninth stage of the Barborská cesta, described as easy to moderately challenging, from Vlkanová to Banská Bystrica, to the 21 km-long FAMILY TRAIL between Banská Bystrica and Zvolen.
Historical traces in the village
One of Vlkanová’s preserved cultural monuments is a reconstructed Renaissance manor house from the 17th century. The building retains its loopholes. The manor house originally served as a guard post during the Ottoman incursions. The historian and literary critic Alexander Matuška was also born in the Vlkanová manor house.
Another distinctive feature is the village’s small branch church. It was built by local residents and has a single-nave interior with a massive portal set in a fully glazed entrance wall. In addition to the manor house, Vlkanová therefore offers a second, distinctly different example of local architectural heritage.
Hiking between Zvolen and Banská Bystrica
The surrounding area can be reached both by road and by rail. Vlkanová is connected by a class III road to a class I road at the junction near Badín. In addition, the electrified Zvolen–Banská Bystrica railway line connects the village with the rest of Slovakia.
For hikers, the eighth stage of the Barborská cesta leads from Zvolen to Vlkanová and is 23.5 km long. In the opposite direction, the ninth stage begins at Fort Geronimo in Vlkanová. It follows marked hiking trails towards Banská Bystrica, including via Kozlinec and to the Vartovka Observatory. This stage is considered easy to moderately challenging.
Badínsky prales: Nature with regulated access
The Badínsky prales national nature reserve is located in Badín, close to Vlkanová. Covering 30.03 ha, the reserve protects original climax beech forest communities in the Kremnica Mountains and includes all three basic developmental phases of European primeval forests.
Access here is expressly regulated: to protect the reserve, entry to Badínsky prales is permitted only as part of excursions accompanied by staff of the Poľana Protected Landscape Area administration. The Badínsky prales educational trail is also listed for Badín and Vlkanová. It is 1 km long, takes approximately 1 hour, includes two stations and is considered easy.
The flat FAMILY TRAIL and experiences on the Hron
The 21 km-long FAMILY TRAIL between Banská Bystrica and Zvolen reaches Vlkanová via blue cycle route no. 2565 and a forest path along the railway line. The route is flat and suitable for families with children as well as recreational and Sunday cyclists. The Geronimo water sports camp is located at the entrance to the village, welcoming cyclists as well as water sports enthusiasts.
Fort Geronimo in Vlkanová is a camp on the Hron River for canoeists and other river travelers; drinks and food are available by the river. Those looking for a shorter connection by bicycle can also consider the Vlkanová–Hronsek route: it begins in the center of Vlkanová and runs mostly on unpaved surfaces. Another route, BB–Môlča–Vlkanová–BB, passes through the Mičinské lúky and below Kozlinec before descending to Vlkanová through the Peťovská Valley.
