Harmanec: Cave, Mountain Trails and Living History

Harmanec brings together mountain scenery, industrial history and marked trails in a compact area. The town lies at the meeting point of the Veľká Fatra and Kremnické vrchy mountain ranges. At the same time, trails lead from here to Harmanecká Cave, through valleys and farther into the surrounding mountain landscapes. Anyone looking for a place in Slovakia with nature experiences and a clearly recognizable history will find several distinct points of interest in Harmanec.

Paper Mill and Krnačka Tradition

The settlement of Harmanec developed around a paper mill built in 1829. In the second half of the 19th century, the Harmanec paper mill was the largest machine-paper mill in Hungary. This industrial past is one of the defining historical themes of the town and complements the landscape experiences with an insight into the region’s economic development.

Harmanec has also preserved a lively Carnival tradition: the Krnačka races. Krnačky are larger sledges that were originally used to transport hay and wood. The custom therefore points not only to the cycle of the year, but also to the former use of the mountain landscape and its paths.

Nature Reserve between Veľká Fatra and Kremnické vrchy

The Harmanecká Tisina Nature Reserve has been protected in Harmanec since 1949 and covers 20.05 hectares. Harmanecká Tisina is known for its extensive occurrence of yew trees in the limestone region of Veľká Fatra. In the wider regional surroundings of Harmanec, it is considered the oldest national nature reserve in Veľká Fatra National Park and protects one of the largest yew populations in Central Europe. This means the landscape can be experienced not only as a mountain backdrop, but also through its distinctive tree vegetation.

Hiking Trails and Harmanecká Cave

Several trails with different routes are available for exploring the area on foot. Marked hiking trail 8439/a leads from Harmanec through the Cenovo Valley to Kordíky and onward to Kordícke Sedlo; the route takes about three hours. The blue-marked hiking trail 2617 begins at Harmanec railway station, leads via Harmanecká Cave to Kordíky and takes about three and a half hours. The two descriptions clearly distinguish between a trail through the Cenovo Valley and a route from the railway station via the cave.

In the surroundings of Harmanec, access to Harmanecká Cave follows a 1,420-metre-long winding trail with an elevation gain of 260 metres. Information boards belonging to an educational trail stand along the ascent route. In the surrounding area, the cave has a 1,020-metre-long visitor circuit. The educational trail to Harmanecká Cave is 1.3 kilometres long and has nine information boards. At the cave destination, the forest route, the information along the ascent and the circuit inside the cave thus remain separate elements of the experience.

Veľké Cenovo and Other Mountain Connections

A mountain road through the Veľké Cenovo Valley connects Harmanec with Kordíky. In the valley, the Cenovo small hydropower plant preserves a piece of industrial history in the Harmanecká Valley. A water wheel at the small hydropower plant generates electricity to illuminate the accessible area and the terrace. The power plant also has a terrace with seating in a landscaped setting.

The long-distance Barborská cesta trail also passes through Harmanec. Mountain trails lead from a meadow near Harmanec to the Križná mountain massif and into the Lelekovo Valley in the Staré Hory area. The range of routes therefore extends from signposted connections and the cave destination to continuing mountain trails and a long-distance hiking trail.
