Hiadeľ between Village Customs and Remembrance Culture

Hiadeľ presents Slovak village culture not as a folkloric backdrop, but through festivals, sites of remembrance, regional cuisine and preserved customs. If you are looking for a place with a strong local character for your trip to Slovakia, you will encounter firefighting traditions, historical traces and events spread throughout the year that reveal different aspects of the village.

Festivals and Customs Throughout the Year

An important event is the annual Hody na sv. Františka. It takes place on the Sunday closest to 4 October. A holy mass is followed by a communal agape. International Firefighters' Day is celebrated every year on 4 May. Its programme is specifically aimed at children; it also includes a firefighting competition with teams from the surrounding municipalities. For families, this date can therefore offer a particularly vivid encounter with local community life.

Among the preserved Pentecost customs is the erection of maypoles in front of the houses. In addition, a decorated tree is put up in the village square. During Carnival, masked members of the volunteer fire brigade and other volunteers, accompanied by an accordion player, walk through the village singing. In the evening, the community gathers for a disco. The St. John's bonfire takes place on the weekend after St. John's Day: People gather around a large fire and celebrate the beginning of summer.

Early December also has its own event. St. Nicholas Day with a Christmas market takes place in the community centre and includes activities for children, including decorating gingerbread and making Christmas decorations. Homemade products such as scented candles, Christmas wreaths, Christmas ornaments and wooden products are offered. There is also gingerbread, sweets, as well as alcoholic or non-alcoholic punch.

Remembrance, Firefighting and the Village Landscape

The history of the village is made tangible in several places. A commemorative plaque on a school building recalls that, during the Slovak National Uprising, the partisan headquarters of A. S. Yegorov and a military field hospital were temporarily housed there. The local organisation of the Slovak Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters organises wreath-laying ceremonies every year on 24 March and 29 August at two memorial sites in Hiadeľ and its immediate surroundings.

The memorial room of DHZ Hiadeľ is dedicated to the local fire brigade. There you can see numerous awards, winner's trophies, medals and certificates, as well as firefighting protective clothing with a helmet and breathing apparatus. The traditional folk costume of Hiadeľ also contributes to the cultural context. It belonged to the Central Slovak variant of the Detva–Podkonice type.

A distinctive religious building is the Chapel of Saint Francis. The late Neoclassical chapel was built between 1847 and 1856. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Houses Nos. 104 and 110 are also currently protected buildings. Hiadeľ therefore has both religious and historical points of interest within its village landscape.

Landscape Features and Older Traces

In the vicinity of Hiadeľ, Moštenické hradisko lies on the summit of Hradište. Based on the pottery recovered during the investigation of the site and its surroundings, its origin is dated to the Late Bronze Age. The tourist educational trail in Hiadeľ has a map on which you can click on the individual markers to display information about the content of the respective information panels. Hiadeľská Kyslá also emerges at two places in the immediate surroundings.

Krumplovník as a Culinary Symbol

Krumplovník, a traditional dish made from potatoes and flour, is part of the local identity and has been prepared in Hiadeľ since the time of the great-grandparents. At the Hiadlovský Krumplovník community celebration in the second half of September, the dish is baked and can be sampled.
