Riečka combines sacred architectural history and preserved folk architecture with hiking opportunities in the surrounding area. The Catholic church dates from 1858; the Riečanské Vrchy and the Barborská cesta also give the village a strong connection to the landscape and outdoor activities.

Churches, Folk Architecture and Memorial Room

The late-classical Catholic church in Riečka was built in 1858. It houses a folk-style statue of the Pietà, transferred from a derelict wayside chapel. The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary is located within Riečka’s cadastral area and was built between 1790 and 1792. These buildings mark different stages in the village’s sacred history: the chapel is older, while the church adds to the architectural history of the 19th century.

Numerous examples of 19th-century folk architecture have also been preserved in Riečka. A memorial room has been set up in part of house No. 126. Most of its exhibits come from private collections belonging to residents of the municipality. Alongside its buildings, the village’s cultural themes therefore also include mementos from the local community.

Riečka’s historical economy also included day labourers working in the smelting works in Tajov and Banská Bystrica, as well as in the surrounding mines.

Riečanské Vrchy and Hiking Trails

The Riečanské Vrchy are located in the Kremnica Mountains. A viewpoint there is a destination for tourist excursions. Ascents of the Riečanské Vrchy are organised in both summer and winter; traditional ascents also include one at the end of the year. More than 20 surviving springs have been counted in the hills and valleys of Riečka. The viewpoint, seasonal ascents and springs represent different ways in which the village is connected to nature.

The Barborská cesta offers an alternative hiking route from Uľanka via Riečanské sedlo to Riečka. From there, a marked alternative section continues to Tajov. The direction can help you choose your stages: Riečka is the destination of the section from Uľanka, or the starting point for continuing to Tajov. In the wider region around Riečka, there are also opportunities to hike on marked trails to Riečanské sedlo and to use cycling routes.

Near the Prameň Pátra Mateja spring area, in the surroundings of Riečka, there is a public picnic area beside a hiking trail leading to Riečka. Check the current condition of the trail and picnic area before setting out. The picnic area, Areál oddychu pri Prameni pátra Mateja, has also served as the venue for a community gathering.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

Riečanská hostina is considered a traditional festival in Riečka; one edition took place in mid-August. At one edition of the Hostina, goulash, pumpkin, boiled corn and homemade specialities were served. A baking competition is also part of the local festival’s history: at one edition, five teams baked more than 20 sweet and savoury varieties of yeast cake. These examples bring together festival food and communal baking—two different sides of local festival life.
