Priechod lies in the northern part of the Banská Bystrica Basin, on the southern slopes of the western part of the Low Tatras. The Ľupča stream flows through the entire cadastral area. The basin setting, mountain slopes and waterways offer different perspectives on the village. Local points of interest include protected areas and notable plants, as well as archaeological traces, buildings and folklore. For your trip to Slovakia, Priechod can therefore be viewed as a destination with natural and cultural history, whose highlights you can prioritize according to your interests.

Landscape and Plant Life

About 1 km north of Priechod, in the Ľupčica valley on both sides of the stream, lies the Brvnište protected area. A large, thriving population of Fatra cyclamen grows there. It is isolated from the species’ main range in the Veľká Fatra and the northeastern part of the Starohorské vrchy. The Kopec protected area is another botanical point of interest: Ivan’s feather grass (Stipa joannis) and Fumana procumbens grow there; both species are found only sporadically throughout the Low Tatras National Park and its protected area. The nature-related features therefore differ in scale: Brvnište is notable for an isolated population, while the two species occur only sporadically across the wider national park area.

Archaeology and Architectural History

The educational trail to the Kamenná–Hrádok archaeological site has four stops and follows a field path directly to the site of a prehistoric fortification near the “transmitter.” Priechod also has several distinctive religious and historical landmarks. The Chapel of the Archangel Michael was built in 1833 and is the village’s oldest historic building. Its altar features a folk wood carving of the Virgin Mary from the 19th century. The Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary was consecrated on September 19, 2021, as part of celebrations marking its 50th anniversary. The parish building, dating from 1995, now houses a monastery of the Discalced Carmelite community. Together, these buildings offer different historical and religious points of reference.

Folklore and Theatre

The Priechoďan folk group was founded in 1968, initially as a women’s singing group; men joined shortly afterward. It has been active without interruption since its founding and takes part in folklore festivals at home and abroad. Traditionally, on the first Sunday in August, an afternoon of folklore takes place each year under the name “Čô sa stauo v tom Priechode”; every five years, or to mark a milestone anniversary of the group’s founding, it is replaced by a folklore festival. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance. An active amateur theatre group is also part of village life and stages performances at Christmas and Easter.

Agriculture, Local Products and Your Stay

In the 20th century, Priechod was an agricultural and pastoral community and one of Slovakia’s most important centers of sheep farming. After the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic, women from Priechod sold Oštiepky and Parenice cheeses throughout the country, including as far afield as Prague and Karlovy Vary. This aspect of the village’s history links agriculture and sheep farming with the specific story of selling local products.

The Ľupčica valley has numerous rest areas associated with grilling or cooking over a fire. As facilities may vary, check what is available at each spot before visiting. The different interests available can help you weigh up your travel options: landscape and plant life on the one hand, folklore, archaeology and architectural history on the other. This comparison can help you decide whether Priechod is the right destination before looking for accommodation.
