Staré Hory – Educational Trails, Pilgrimage and Mining History

Staré Hory brings together several facets of the Slovak mountain landscape: paths through protected forests, a Marian pilgrimage tradition dating back to the late 15th century, and the history of a mining settlement established in the 13th century. This gives you a destination where nature, regional culture and religious sites stand closely alongside one another, without having to be reduced to the same experience.

Educational Trails and Protected Landscapes

A clear choice for hikers is the “Lesnícky náučný chodník Jozefa Dekreta Matejovie” educational trail. It runs for 9.5 km from Dolný Jelenec to Staré Hory and includes 13 stations. The trail is self-guided, laid out as a linear walking route, can be walked in both directions and is usable year-round. Its route passes through Veľká Fatra National Park and the protected area of Dekretov porast. This means the route can be understood as an independent hiking experience with a focus on forestry and natural history.

The individual protected areas also give Staré Hory a distinctive landscape profile. Majerova skala is a protected natural formation established to protect a striking rock formation with protected and endangered plant and animal species. Above Rybô lies Dekretov porast, covering 6.22 ha and containing valuable larches, spruces, firs and beeches that are almost 200 years old. Jelenec also refers to a rocky strip approximately 600 metres long above the main road between Staré Hory and Donovaly. It extends westward from the monument to Jozef Dekret Matejovie towards Dolný Jelenec.

Two Named Routes to Staré Hory

Staré Hory is also the destination of two differently themed routes. The first stage of the “Barborská cesta” route leads from Banská Bystrica to Staré Hory. The “Partizánsky chodník” educational trail runs from Špania Dolina to Staré Hory, is 11 km long and has five stations.

Mining History and Regional Culture

The historical character of the village is reflected in several exhibitions. Beside the “Kaplnka sv. Anny” chapel, a private permanent exhibition with texts and images documents the mining history of Staré Hory and its associated mining settlements. It displays 377 collection objects. A regional local-history exhibition at Staré Hory 106 opened in 2010. The cultural distinctiveness of the area also includes Starohorská bobbin lace-making, a characteristic expression of folk art associated with the mining tradition of the municipality of Staré Hory in the Banská Bystrica District.

This historical picture is complemented by memorial sites. The MOR-HO monument in the Dolný Jelenec settlement of Staré Hory is dedicated to the members of the fifth battalion of the “Pomstiteľ” partisan brigade. The monument to Jozef Dekret Matejovie near Dolný Jelenec was unveiled on 16 September 1913 and is considered the oldest monument dedicated to him. Staré Hory also holds an annual public commemorative event for the Slovak National Uprising, with a cultural and sporting programme.

Pilgrimage and Sacred Sites

Staré Hory’s Marian pilgrimage tradition dates back to the end of the 15th century. The “Bazilika návštevy Panny Márie” basilica is a centre of Marian devotion in the Diocese of Banská Bystrica. The “Rímskokatolícky Kostol Návštívenia Panny Márie” church in Staré Hory was granted the status of a minor basilica in 1990. Studnička is now the name of an expanded pilgrimage complex.

Further sites add depth to this religious focus. The “Kaplnka sv. Anny” chapel was built in 1794, renovated and given new interior furnishings in 1832; it continues to serve its religious purpose. The Calvary of Staré Hory includes the “Kaplnka Panny Márie Sedembolestnej” chapel, which dates from 1893. During your stay, you can therefore experience different sides of the same place, from nature trails and mining history to sacred buildings.
