Môlča: Karst Landscape and Village History

Môlča is located in the northern part of the Zvolenská vrchovina upland, in the valley of the Môlčiansky potok stream and its tributary, Malá Môlča. The village thus combines a clearly defined valley area with karst formations, underground landscapes, historical traces, and routes through the surrounding countryside. If you are looking for a place with several different points of interest for your trip to Slovakia, Môlča cannot be reduced to a single excursion destination.

Karst, Caves, and Mining History

To the east of Môlča lies a 2 km² karst island. This landscape includes Mariana Cave, a short cave with three branches. It is located in the Môlčianska Valley opposite the turnoff to Malá Môlča. The entrance is on the left below a rock face, in a disused quarry. Its exact location combines several distinctive landmarks: the valley, the turnoff, the rock face, and the former quarry.

A separate site is Na Drienku (Starý Drienok). This is an old mine that partly transitions into karst formations. The associated system is approximately 2 km long. The explicitly described features include difficult orientation, water within the system, and the instability of the entire mining system. Na Drienku thus represents both the area’s mining history and the distinctive geological formations around Môlča.

History and Village Character

Môlča was founded around 1300 on the territory of Comes Miku, the son of Radun. The first written mention of the village dates from 1424, when Môlča was called Mocha. Historic cellars are located in the village centre. Another visible feature of the village is the Môlča village belfry: the brick structure has a square ground plan and a pyramidal roof. A memorial plaque commemorating the victims of the First World War is affixed to it.

This creates an unusual combination of natural and cultural themes for visitors. The karst island, Mariana, and Na Drienku represent the landscape and its underground formations, while the belfry, memorial plaque, historic cellars, and the recorded details of the village make Môlča’s history visible and easier to understand.

Routes with Different Points of Reference

If you would like to include Môlča in an active trip, cycle route No. 2 runs from Banská Bystrica via Môlča and Horná Mičiná to Vlkanová and back to Banská Bystrica. Another route leads from the junction outside Šalková along the road to Môlča; from the village centre, it continues towards Horná Mičiná. The two descriptions therefore set out different starting points and routes: cycle route No. 2 is described as a named connection returning to Banská Bystrica, while the second route is oriented via Šalková and the village centre.
