Banská Bystrica: History, Museums and Trails

Banská Bystrica combines defining chapters of Slovak history with museums, technical monuments and trails through the landscape. For your travel decision, the combination of urban history and different ways of exploring is particularly interesting: you can place exhibitions about the city and region in context, follow historical sites within the city or get to know Urpín on an educational trail.

History and Industrial Traces

On 29 August 1944, the Slovak National Uprising was proclaimed in Banská Bystrica as armed resistance against the fascist occupation. This date is one of the city’s defining historical references and gives a stay there a clear contemporary-historical dimension.

Another story is told by Medený hámor. The facility was in continuous operation for almost 500 years, from 1496 to 1991. Today, the internationally significant technical monument comprises four protected sites: “Hiarty”, “Dielne”, the “Výrobné haly” with laboratories and electrolysis, and the “Vodný náhon”.

Museum in Thurzov dom

Thurzov dom is a three-storey burgher palace from the beginning of the 16th century and is now home to the Stredoslovenské múzeum. In this setting, the permanent Tranzithistory exhibition presents the development and history of the building, the city of Banská Bystrica and the region. The permanent exhibition displays more than 2,000 collection objects from archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnology and fine art.

This makes it possible to approach the museum visit thematically in different ways: archaeology and history lead into the past, numismatics adds a perspective on coins and monetary history, while ethnology and fine art offer further ways of accessing the region. The Historical Tour begins at the Clock Tower on Námestie SNP. On Národná ulica, it includes, among other sites, the building of the Štátna opera and Hotel Národný dom.

Urpín: Educational Trail, Calvary and Starting Point

The Banská Bystrica-Mesto railway station below Urpín, also called “Malá stanica”, is a starting point for the serpentine path up Urpín. The Serpentíny Urpín educational trail is 3.6 km long, takes about 2.5 hours and is classified as easy to moderately difficult. The time indication is only an approximate guide.

Urpín is also home to the Urpínska kalvária. It consists of eight stations with a chapel, a church standing on the hill, an avenue of trees and a small monastery. Thus, within the same named area, an educational trail related to the landscape and a religiously oriented ensemble with several clearly designated components stand side by side.

Nature and Trails Through the Region

The thematically organized Príroda stredného Slovenska exhibition at Tihányiovský kaštieľ presents a picture of the nature of the Banská Bystrica region through plant and animal exhibits. It complements the historical collections with a natural-history perspective and focuses attention on the region’s flora and fauna.

The Barborská cesta offers a longer combination of physical activity and regional orientation. It begins and ends in Banská Bystrica and is divided into nine stages. The route can be completed on foot or by bicycle. This clearly distinguishes it from the shorter Serpentíny educational trail: while the latter is described as a 3.6 km route with an approximate duration of 2.5 hours, the Barborská cesta is designed as a nine-stage route and specified for two modes of transport.
